The front wheel would not fit onto the "fork"; either the prongs of the fork had bent so that they were too close together, or they had been welded incorrectly. Huffy has agreed to send me a new fork, & they claim that "it's easy" to replace the old one .... so we'll see.
**update: 2 hrs later -- one of the rear serrated nuts (that holds the wheel to the rear axle) is stripped, so it can't be attached. **
I called Huffy 2x today, & after waiting for what seemed like weeks, they agreed to send me a new fork and a new nut. I got two separate stories from them. Re: the fork? That's a "shipping accident." There's *no way* that the fork could have been made incorrectly. (My take: not a shipping problem. The connectors at the end of each prong appear to be welded slightly too close together.) Re: the nut? "That's a problem we have when the bikes get sent to the U.S. from China. We don't have a chance to look inside each box to see if it was built correctly. That's why we [the Huffy Parts Center] are here -- to replace all the parts that don't work!"
On each phone call, they were totally unapologetic -- they blamed amazon for the mis-welded fork & "China" for the stripped nut. I am never buying anything from Huffy again. I'd suggest amazon do the same, since -- with respect to the mis-welded fork -- they blamed the whole problem on "shipping."
Really disappointing, particularly given that I purchased this for my 5-y.o. son, who was hysterical with excitement when the bike arrived.Read more ›
It was difficult to assemble because the instructions were useless - they included detailed instructions for installing a lot of things that did not come with this model, like reflectors, hand breaks, storage basket and child passenger seat, but no instructions for basic assembly.
As other commentors noticed you can't assemble the front wheel as packaged. There are two sets of nuts on each side of the wheel. It looks like you're supposed to have one of each set inside the fork, and one on the outside, but this makes the wheel + nuts too wide for the fork. They must have started shipping with a different nut than called for in the original design. We just left one nut off and rearranged the other spacing washers a little so that the wheel fit in the fork securely but is slightly off center. The packaging the bike came in was mostly destroyed in shipping (but did protect the bike from damage) and it was 2 days before Christmas, so I didn't want to attempt a return.
Tires are of such poor quality that you can see light through the tread. Tubes are so poor that you can't patch them.
Worked great for 6 months and now is ready to be recycled because the bottom bracket failure isn't repairable.
Repairs are hard to do because everything about the bike is of abysmal quality.
