When Teddy accepts an assignment from the wife of the head of psychology at the hospital where he volunteers, he senses immediately that her brother isn't like his usual client for cuddle and companion services. The job is to spend an entire month with the brother who has recently been depressed and withdrawn from his family. Riordan, the brother-in-law of the psychologist, has a super secret job as an assassin that he was blackmailed into as a young adult. His family believes he is a covert operator of some sort, for the government. Riordan has a surprise coming because he has no idea what Teddy is coming there to do. He just agreed to whatever his sister has planned if it will keep his family off his back for an entire month. Someone coming to stay with him for a month wasn't even on his radar.
After an assignment went terribly wrong, Riordan has no idea what he is going to do next. He could previously justify his work but not this time. He doesn't want to go back but there is likely only one, terminal, way out. Spending time with Teddy, at times Riordan feels as though he fell down the rabbit hole and is having tea and cupcakes with Alice's companions. He begins to want a future but Riordan has no idea he can possibly make that happen.
This story is crazy good and a bit crazy as well. We alternate between cuddling, and cupcakes, guns, garrotes, and knives. Teddy has no idea, no comprehension of Riordan's world and Riordan likewise can't really believe how naive Teddy can be. Each man does know that they want very much, in one way or another, to take care of the other.
This story is so unexpected; not your usual gay romance. The assassin and the hugger, the killer and the video game tester in the bunny suit, seem to make absolutely no sense together yet it works perfectly. The author creates characters that are real and authentic with emotions, relationships, and experiences. I almost forgot to mention how much I appreciated visiting with Snow and his husband, from this author's debut novel, Snow's Falling. That was a win and this one is as well!
As a reader, I was quickly engaged with the story quickly came to know the main and secondary characters as people. The writing is beautiful, emotional and at times makes the hairs on my arms stand up.
"I got you." He pressed his lips against my neck, tattooing his promise into my skin."
When I came out with my first book, it was so well received, I kept reworking it's sequel for a a few years, instead of putting it out right away. Why? Fear of not living up to the acceptance or hype. (Let's face it, The sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird was held back for about 50 years..... and then.. we found out there was a reason... heh.)
This wasn't really a sequel, but it was a second book, so I guess I understood the hesitation. I know I had it with my books. But, Riordan and Teddy as a couple just drew me in.. Two opposites, really needing each other in many way, just to live, to survive, to be.
These men were meant to be together..They just meshed. And, a semi sequel DID happen, for we revisited with Snow and Christopher too.
You know, it took Thomas Harris almost 10 years in between books to bring back the chapters of his famous serial killer. I know fear is there about our success. But we should trust that too. And our fans. And our own style. Your write amazingly well, Davidson King. Trust yourself. This was very good.
Teddy is a hugger. He uses touch to help people through traumatic life events. People who need a human touch to help them heal, or make their lives more comfortable.. He is hired to give comfort to Riordan. They come to an uncomfortable agreement to spend a month together. Riordan’s past comes calling and with Teddy’s life in his hands he vows to do anything to protect him.
Riordan and Teddy shouldn't work. A cold hearted man, dead inside. A sweet, kind hearted, caring man full of life. These men were meant to be life mates. They are so sweet and hot together. I fell in such serious like with them. A big plus, we got a revisit with Snow and Christopher. You don't have to have read Snow Falling to enjoy this book, but if you haven't you are missing a good book.
This is how the two meet, as Riordan's sister knows her brother needs some human contact and companionship in his life, she hires Teddy. But an assassin's life is a tricky thing lol. And there's lots of ups and downs and chaos and intrigue as they try to find a mole in their organization. That's all I'll say about the plot, as I don't like to give away the storyline. Great story and great characters, a fun little romp. I deducted a star for the editing/proofing. There are numerous typos, misspellings, or sometimes missing words. This frustrates me as I feel most were very easy fixes. All in all a very solid follow up.
