I really love this mat and I am so glad that I purchased it, but there are some things that buyers should know to make sure this is the right mat for them.
If you are planning on doing hot yoga with this mat, you should be sure to use a towel. I normally put it on top of the mat (where my hands are) to prevent slipping. My sister uses this one sometimes and says that she is fine with just wiping off her hands when they get sweaty. With the towel it is absolutely fine. The fact that a mat gets slippery in hot yoga, is definitely not unique to this company. Almost all mats I have used have gotten slippery when it gets sweaty (with the exception of the $80 manduka that my dog destroyed -__-). It also can get slippery when I practice outside (well practicing outside in Austin Texas is basically bikram anyway!), and I recommend bringing a towel along outside, just in case! So out of all the low-cost mats that slip, this one is a worthy yoga partner!
Another thing about this mat, is that it is a bit thin. No problems when I practice inside on my hardwood floors or at the yoga studio, but when I go to a rooftop yoga class (concrete surface) my knees get a bit sore. Quick fix-place a towel under your knees :) It definitely doesn't bother me, but if you have any knee problems I would recommend a thicker mat (or a few layers of towels).
All in all this is one of the best mats for the price. No chemical smells here! It is light and stays rolled for easy transport to class. It is even light enough to be able to stow in a suitcase!
If you are searching for a low-cost mat, I highly recommend this one! Thanks Hugger Mugger for a beautiful product!
Good luck finding the perfect mat and in your future yoga adventures!
While I like the mat, it did take some getting used to.
For one, it does have a bit of a smell when first removed from the plastic packaging. I can't really describe it, but it was not an unpleasant smell, just kind of...hmmm...not really rubbery smelling, not latex, but some type of synthetic smell. It does go away after a while.
For another, it was extrememly slippery at first. I had to wash it well with water in the tub and dry it in the sun to remove the slippery coating that came on it. It is now not slippery as it was, but once the class heats up, if I am sweating a bit on hands and feet, I definitely slip on it, particularly my hands doing down dog. This slipperiness is pretty standard on these sticky-type mats, so this is not a particular defect of the mat itself, just the nature of this type of material.
If you practice any kind of hot yoga, this would probably not be a good choice for you, unless you use one of those skidless blankets with it.
If you do hatha yoga and don't sweat a whole lot, then I really recommend the mat for its wonderful softness and beautiful look.
UPDATE 5/2009 - Since I have had it a while, and it was getting a bit dirty, I tried washing the mat in the tub with the tiniest amount of shampoo. BAD IDEA! Part of what makes this mat so spongy and comfy is all the little miniature air pockets inside the mat that are now trapped full of H20 and...soap bubbles! It has been drying for 2 days, and I am hopeful it will be OK. If you wash it after using it for a while, just hose it offf, per my yoga teacher. Don't submerge it, or you might be sorry like I am!
UPDATE 6/2012 - About a year ago, I replaced this mat with another one because I loved it so much. This second mat lasted about a year - so disappointing. What started to happen is that the mat started to disintegrate toward the bottom where my toes are during plank, chaturanga, and the flip over the toes to downward dog. I do more yoga now than when I initially posted my review of this product, and I do more vinyasa type yoga (with sun salutations) which may be the cause of the earlier deterioration of the mat where my feet are in plank. But I was very disappointed it didn't last longer. I have since replaced the mat with a Jade Harmony mat which I love. It is not as cushy as this one, but better for me and my practice now.
I used to slip and slide a lot when doing yoga... This mat helps a lot with this! But I also use this hand powder bag: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003329SIM/ref=oh_details_o03_s01_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1.
I'm getting much better at yoga and really look forward to it every week now that I have this cute mat!
As for the complaints that people had, yes it did have an odor when I first opened it, I washed it with soap and water per directions and it was 90% better and over the course of a few days, the odor became non existent For me a non issue.
Some people complained the mat is a little slippery. I would agree with this at least initially, but that also got better with time, probably took about a month to break it in. Now its fine. Since I plan to have this mat for quite a while this was no biggie either.
Pretty sure if I had to do over again I would make the same choice. I like my mat.
