I believe what that customer experienced is taking the RedBox XLR output into a computer *without* selecting a cabinet to model. This also happened to me but was quickly corrected by reading the instructions and selecting a cabinet to model OR alternatively I was also able to use a cabinet modeler in my DAW as well.
I also tried the headphone out to the USB interface I have - and that worked fine as well ( all 4 channels)
Otherwise the rest of my experience has been great and very much as advertised.
The 4 channels provide very instant classic presets that all sound great. You can dial in some reverb or delay if you want it and of course patch in a effect of your own with the effects loop. I felt like the Crunch channel instantly gave an AC/DC vibe while the Lead channel was somewhere in the Van Halen category. The ultra channel really changed dramatically when I tried the different cabinet presets - I can see dialing in different sounds.
I also tried out the 2watt 20watt 200 watt switches and those work as advertised as well. It was super neat to set it to 2watts and turn it up (still quite loud). Obviously the 200 watt setting is extreme and I wouldn't recommend high volumes at this level without ear protection - its too much by far - but if you have some kind of concern you wont be heard at a gig (say your leads wont punch through) this should leave no doubt if you have a proper cabinet behind it.
I am a hard rock / blues/ metal player and as a baseline this made me happy across the board. I may still plugin some pedals but as a baseline I could see myself getting within the 90th percent of almost any sound I want with this.
Hopefully I can get a working one soon as I’ve heard them sounding great.
It has an outstanding feature set, 4 channels, all of which sound amazing with a little patience and know how. The connectivity options are great and the iPad app is very intuitive, which makes editing and saving presets simple and quick.
I use mostly the "Lead" channel in different variations of gain stages to produce 70's, 80's, 90's and modern overdrive tones. I have used the "Ultra" channel a few times for some stand-in gigs I did for some friends covering Pantera, In Flames and Disturbed material. The "Crunch" channel is outstanding and can really dial in modern Mesa Mark V type of tones. Lastly, I found the "Clean" channel to be able to replicate all types of tones from Twin Reverb to JC120 to fat Hot Rod Deluxe type of tones.
The amp actually does take overdrive and distortion pedals extremely well with a little know how and patience. I have not tried with any Fuzz pedals as I am not a huge fan of those types of dirt pedals in general.
I bought this amp specifically for live shows as I was tired of lugging around my Mesa JP-2C and the Black Spirit eight pound weight REALLY appealed to me.
Overall this is an absolutely outstanding sounding amp with loads of power, 128 editable preset options, all types of on board effects and a host of connectivity options via Bluetooth, H&K Red Box, 3.5mm Aux port and of course the standard 1/4" connectivity.
My Live Setup: H&K Black Spirit 200, 2 Lone Star Audio custom 4X12 cabinets, Maxon OD808, Mesa Boogie FluxDrive, TC Electronics MojoMojo pedal, Boss MS-3 (Mostly for Overdrive switching), Tremonti Wah
Video of a live performance with one of my tribute bands. The really "Big" rhythm tone is the Black Spirit 200.
All I can say is wow! Every channel on this thing is excellent. Saw another review that mentioned the Ultra channel was worthless, couldn't disagree more! Out of the box it was a little muddy but after tweaking the settings it screams. Can pull off everything from Pantera, Megadeth and Slayer in Ultra then dial it back for Ted Nugent and Dokken on the Crunch channel. Clean is fantastic too and the Lead channel will make you feel like you can take on Yngwie Malmsteen :)
I did pair mine with the HK footswitch, didn't spring for the cab though (wouldn't have gotten it in time for Christmas). Ended up buying a B52 4x12 and love it!
Don't question the purchase, just do it!
