And that's how I've ended up using this item. I don't use the mouse on the stick because the cat immediately figures out it's my hand controlling the action and he attacks my hand in his attempt to capture the mouse.
Instead, I put a soft toy inside the box and shove the open end up against the wall. I do like that there are multiple holes and that he can't see inside the box. As with all his toys, I rotate and bring this item out only once a week or so.
Even though I wouldn't say the cost vs use has worked out for me, I'm giving it 4 stars because it's a good design and the product will last a long time. Also, I think it could be fun for little kids to play with. :)
It is made pretty well, it feels solid and will definitely hold up to a lot of use from a cat, the little holes are covered in a plastic type stuff similar to those recycled reusable grocery bags so they are hard to rip and tear. The box is made out of some kind of MDF board and the mouse is just a little stuffed animal attached to the stick. the side with the 9 holes is definitely better than the side with the paw on it, the paw is too big to really fool the cat and the dog can get his face in there and bite the mouse too easily.
One thing I noticed is that the cat figures out pretty fast that you are the one controlling the mouse so they lose interest, so a longer stick would be nice so you can hide your hand under a blanket or something so the cat doesn't figure it out too quick.
Overall this is a pretty neat toy, I will need to get a longer dowel rod for the mouse to make it easier to operate but as it is it still works fine.
