Purchase options and add-ons

Today, human genetics is for everyone. It is about variation more than about illnesses, and increasingly about the common rather than about the rare. Once an obscure science or an occasional explanation for an odd collection of symptoms, human genetics is now part of everyday conversation. By coming to know genetic backgrounds, people can control their environments in more healthy ways. Genetic knowledge is, therefore, both informative and empowering. The 10th edition of Human Genetics: Concepts and Applications shows students how and why that is true.

Users who purchase Connect receive access to the full online eBook version of the textbook.

Introducing the 12th edition of my textbook, Human Genetics: Concepts and Applications! It has been a great privilege to chronicle the evolution of human genetics, from an academic subfield of life science and a minor medical specialty to a growing body of knowledge that will affect us all.

The more than a million human genomes sequenced so far reveal that we are much more alike than different, yet those differences among 3 million of our 3.2 billion DNA building blocks hold clues to our variation and diversity.

Complementing and updating my textbook coverage is my steady stream of essays and articles. Read them at my DNA Science blog at Public Library of Science, at Genetic Literacy Project, at Science Trends, and at Medscape Medical News.

RICKI LEWIS is a Ph.D. geneticist, science writer, and genetic counselor. The author of one of the most widely used human genetics textbooks in the world, she's also written the only popular book on gene therapy ("The Forever Fix: Gene Therapy and the Boy Who Saved It"; St. Martin's Press, 2013) and published thousands of articles. She's also author of the short book Human Genetics: The Basics, and co-author of two human anatomy and physiology textbooks. This Book is the 10th Edition by Ricki Lewis. So she has it down Pat. Organization is excellent and it covers everything that I could think of. The glossary of terms is a big help too. Extensive use of images helps when words alone are not enough. I like it. My only problem is the font size is as bit small for me. But the book is already pretty massive. Increasing the Font size would make the book unwieldy. I got a very good USED paperback copy for an amazingly low price. Fast delivery too.

I got this book for a college course in human genetics, and it is not just relevant, but very interesting! I actually want to read this book when I have a new chapter assignment. The text is easily understood, but it still has the substance necessary to successfully complete my course.

I ordered this book, used, before I even signed up for the free trial amazon student/prime and I don't think it cost me more than $60! Plus decent ship time considering how inexpensive it all was! Great buy! My book came in practically new condition with a hardly noticeable bend in the corner of the cover and two of the page corners were bent. I was VERY pleased considering I watched the mailman walk away right after shoving my poor book in our mailbox! I'm sure my book was perfect before that, so overall I made out like a bandit and I would highly recommend this product.

The background information is interesting and well-written, but I found the instructions cursory and vague. Worse, a number of important topics are neglected entirely.

For example, say I wanted to endow apes with the power of human speech? Or give myself the abilities of a spider (including wall-climbing, web-spinning, and a mysterious "spider-sense")? Would I be able to learn how to do this by reading Human Genetics, by Ricki Lewis?

No, I would not. (Three stars for the background information and the cute pictures on the cover.)

This book is easy to read and the chapters are short enough to read all the way through without getting lost. I hate long chapters during midterms and this book provides a summary after each chapter so you technically do not have to read the chapter.
