Microsociological classic

Given their relatively immediate relevance to life, 'classic' sociological works form part of both the toolkit of public opinion and the academic *lingua franca* known as "theory": Durkheim, Weber, Simmel and Marx are names instantly recognized by humanists and non-sociological social scientists and also acknowledged as important by the better sort of journalist. Ask a full-bore sociologist who *they* think is important, though, and you might get a different answer; the desire to attempt bringing social phenomena under genuinely scientific laws animates academic sociology to this day, and the classics alone are viewed as being too expansive and 'philosophical' to make it happen. One 'sociologist's sociologist' is George C. Homans, whose 1950 book *The Human Group* is a defining document of "microsociology" -- the study of individuals interacting on a small scale. Peter Blau and many others would go on to refine Homans' interactional analysis, but this first book is an accessible and very interesting introduction to this style of thinking.

Homans was a 'saniac' who definitely wished to hew to what is called the "deductive-nomothetic" style of scientific explanation, developing principles as rigorous as Boyle's gas laws, even on a level of detail usually given over to endless "all other things being equal" clauses. In *The Human Group* he utilized a thereafter-famous study of telephone equipment manufacturing by Western Electric and other studies of South Sea islanders and a small town in New England to develop overarching rules of individual behavior which are free of cultural bias or the over-emphasis on culture of "thick description" analyses. These principles concerning friendship, dominance, subgroup behavior and group norms "as a whole" are extremely simple, to the point that critics might call them merely 'simplistic', but they were meant as a first step on a road to a genuinely scientific sociology of the "human scale".

If you have had your fill of loose postmodern talk *The Human Group* will be refreshing, yet it is likely to throw you back into considering the scientific goals of the "classic" sociologists themselves. If you are a student of human behavior you can stand to read this.
