“As the quotes grew longer, and the interviews deeper, Stanton developed a signature storytelling style―one that blends the lure of urban voyeurism with an eye for the extraordinary detail in seemingly ordinary subjects. What makes these photographs compelling is their sincerity, their air of authenticity. All are taken on the spot of first contact. Some people are caught mid-sentence. Even those who pose are free of the sterile stiffness of staged portraits.” ―The Economist
“A wondrous mix of races, ages, genders, and social classes, and on virtually every page is a surprise.” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review
“Some street photographers hide behind phone booths like paparazzi so their subject won't be aware of their presence, but for Stanton it's precisely that awkward interaction, the tearing down of the wall between strangers, that he covets.” ―The Huffington Post
“There's no judgment, just observation and in many cases reverence, making for an inspiring reading and visual experience.” ―Publisher’s Weekly

While Brandon's first release was an excellent book of photography, it lacked many of the stories behind the individuals. I came to find HONY on facebook and feel the story behind the photo is half the experience. With his newest release, it all comes together to give you the full HONY package that most people have come to know and love. This book is a bargain for all the passion and work that Brandon puts into this project.
If you are deciding on whether or not to buy the book, consider the following, which Brandon posted on the HONY facebook page: "I want to take a quick opportunity to remind everyone that HONY is advertisement free and almost entirely financed by book sales. (The only exception being income from a handful of speeches I give every year.) Proceeds from books have been used to pay for trips to twenty different countries over the past year alone. Even when working with large organizations like the United Nations or UNHCR, I’m always very careful to cover all costs and reimburse any expenses. I do this so that the content on HONY can remain entirely independent, self-directed, and transparent. By purchasing a book, you can help HONY continue to grow in a way that remains focused on telling people’s stories--- and nothing else. Thanks to everyone for your continued support."

The photos were only one piece. Reading stories of random people (and I'll always wonder how Brandon chooses who to interview) has changed me. I now assume that everyone has a story because, chances are, they do. We need to treat everyone we meet with the same compassion because we are completely unaware of their feelings, sense of self worth, past or current life struggles and emotional hardships. We don't know how hard they've worked to either get where they are or to build their dreams just to have them shattered by circumstance.
I sincerely hope that Brandon releases a book in the future based on his travels across the globe. My daughter wants to join me for field work to aid Syrian refugees (I'm in a graduate program in global health) because of the stories Brandon Stanton helped to share. He is truly changing the world, not simply by raising millions of dollars for causes we all believe in, but by changing the perspectives of our youth. This is a big deal, and purchasing this book is a wonderful way for you to be a part of this slow transformation of humankind. I cannot recommend this enough. 10 stars!

Stanton does a great job of selection and arrangement of the pictures and stories in the book too, so a natural flow and pace is established with each new picture and the tales which accompany it. The book as a result is highly readable and not simply an interesting table book (not that I would depreciate any of the previous books in contrast to this one, every one of them exudes a humanity, warmth and interest, a certain spirit, when this real begins to resonate with the reader it is not difficult to see how Stanton was considered one of the top thirty beneath thirty among creatives).
In particular I thought the placing of pictures of Obama and his own hopeful thinking next to a more joe average character and his much, much more pessimistic thinking was interesting, though that is only one example, I liked pretty much everything this book had to offer. Recommended.
Recommended to people that feel they cannot overcome their problems and feel a little bit lost. There are people out there facing the same or worst problems than ourselves, sometimes it helps read about them and visualise them.
If you want an idea of the content, you could have a look at their facebook page. It's great!
Cheaper on Amazon - so ordered there and then.
Perfect table book, or gift.
Really lovely, moving and funny too in places.
Nice human photos - nicely written pieces too.
