Hanako Wakiyama was born in Tokyo and moved with her family to California as a teenager. She is a published author and an illustrator of children's books. I bought this book for him, so that he could read a "story" about a humpback whale, instead of just a non-fiction book. This is a cute story that is based on a true story. It turns out well in the end, and if your child loves whales, they will enjoy this story.

For anyone growing up and living in the Bay Area when Humphry came into San Francisco Bay, this is a beloved classic. I had this for my now adult children when they were growing up (saw Humphry on the news). Now my grandson is enjoying this adaptation of the actual events of the whale swimming up an estuary. What an amazing story!! My kids love it. Also appropriate for older kids. More than a lost whale that lost its way, it teaches us that this can also happen to humans. On another lever lever, it’s also interesting to consider WHY so many whales get confused in this area- is it the human induced noises that confuses them?
