Humphrey the Lost Whale: A True Story Paperback – October 21, 2014
Purchase options and add-ons
The heartwarming true story of a wrong-way humpback whale who is helped and cheered back to freedom in San Francisco.
Humpback whales are magnificent creatures that sing beautiful songs to each other underwater. In the whole world there are very few of them, so each one is quite special.
And they are intelligent. Every winter they travel south, every summer they head north, and they always know the way.
But even whales can make mistakes . . .
In October 1985 a forty-five-foot long, forty-ton humpback whale wandered into San Francisco Bay and for twenty-six days struggled mightily to find his way back to the ocean. This true, illustrated story of Humphrey's adventure has been a children's favorite for more than twenty-five years. The 2014 edition has updated news on whales but retains the beloved art and text for big-ocean-mammal lovers everywhere. Adopted for Reading Rainbow.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2024We had this story as kids and it was on reading rainbow. I bought a bunch of them as gifts when visiting family in another country. Figure it was a lightweight gift that shared a bit about where I live to my cousins and other relations that I rarely get to see.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2013I read this book as a kid and just purchased a copy for my three year old nephew. I think the target age for this book is probably a little higher, but he's a bit ahead of the curve in that regard so I'm thinking he's going to enjoy it.
This book has a lot going for it, including finely detailed illustration and writing, but the best part is that it's both true and accurate. As usual, truth is even better than fiction. It's a great account of the bizarre situation, even for adults.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2023My grandsons loved it!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2018My son has been obsessed with humpback whales since we saw many of them in Maui this year. I bought this book for him, so that he could read a "story" about a humpback whale, instead of just a non-fiction book. This is a cute story that is based on a true story. It turns out well in the end, and if your child loves whales, they will enjoy this story.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2011This is a great book. My son received it as a gift when he was 8 years old. He is now 30. We have kept the book all these years. I bought a copy of it for my grandson and also one for school. I use it at school after a reading unit on whales. All the students love the story of Humphrey. I got tired of taking it back and forth from home to school, so I bought a copy just for school. It is such a fun non-fiction story for anyone.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2019For anyone growing up and living in the Bay Area when Humphry came into San Francisco Bay, this is a beloved classic. I had this for my now adult children when they were growing up (saw Humphry on the news). Now my grandson is enjoying this adaptation of the actual events of the whale swimming up an estuary. Great book and love the pictures. Go Wendy Takuda!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2021My son and I loved reading this book and learning about the true story of a whale that had gotten lost up-river in San Francisco beyond the Golden Gate bridge. It was a very touching story.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2014Cute story, cute illustrations. I purchased this as a read-aloud book for a mom of a toddler, but it's a little longer than I expected. Perhaps not that great for a read-aloud due to the length but still a fun story. I like the maps inside the front cover and it was a cute gift to go along with a stuffed whale toy.
