The romance (sex) between characters is hot and steamy and leaves you wanting more. But the best part is how each character overcomes trials to win their mates. No two characters are the same and no two trials the couples endure are either. The detail she uses in the way she describes everything makes it easy to picture her sexy characters and fantastic world!
Nothing in Cole's books is without purpose. Something she mentions in one book usually comes into play in the following book, or later. Each story blends perfectly with one another, leading up to a huge battle between two warring factions.
FINAL DECISION: Fabulous story between a sexy werewolf and a half vampire/half Valkyrie. There is humor and paranormal adventure and pure sexiness and romance. Loved it.
THE STORY: Lachlain Macrieve has been tortured by vampires for over a century. A werewolf and the leader of the Lykae Clan, Lachlan escapes from his torment when he scents his mate. Having search for her for centuries, her appearance gives him strength. When he discovers her, he is shocked and dismayed to discover that she is a vampire -- the mortal enemies of the Lykae. Emmaline Troy aka Emma the Timid, is half vampire and half Valkyrie. Young in immortal years, Emma fears pain and is highly protected by her adoptive family of Valkyrie. Her encounter with the wild Lachlan begins to transform Emma into the woman she was meant to be.
OPINION: I can't believe that it took me so long to discover the Immortals After Dark series. Sexy, funny and exciting, this novel was a fast read because I couldn't put it down. Lachlan is very close to his beast side when he meets Emma. He is frightening and demanding and definitely the alpha male. Emma is fragile and innocent and doesn't believe in herself. Her progression throughout the book is amazing. By the time the ending of the book arrives, she has changed and changed Lachlan.
I like that this book really approaches the issues of the prejudices, lack of understanding, and old emnity between the different immortals groups. The characters are strong and well-defined and each character in the story has a separate identity and I want to know more about each of them. For me the fact that I was satisfied with this book and yet want more is the sign of a great series.
WORTH MENTIONING: Cole has created a very complex world and the overarching story is beginning to play out.
CONNECTED BOOKS: A HUNGER LIKE NO OTHER is the second book in the Immortals After Dark series. It can be read as a standalone.
STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.
I would seriously recommend getting this book, and you should just go ahead and buy all the others in the series at the same time because you are going to end up doing it, might as well buy them all at once!
The Good: Lots of action, a hero that does anything for his lady, a surprisingly strong female who can kick ass, and a few twists that I didn't see coming.
The Bad: Hero was supposed to be smart but came across as a special kind of Neanderthal dumb, weird sex scene, confusing system of supernatural that's not explained until the back of the book, and a lack of details describing where characters are until the end of the story.
The Ugly: The author tried to write a couple of character's dialogue with a Scottish accent but it just made the dialogue hard to understand and contributed to the dumbing down of the characters.
I don't know if I'd pay full price for this book, doubt I'll read the story a second time, and I know it won't make my favorites list.
Happy reading my fellow bookworms.
There were a few funny moments that actually made me laugh out loud, like when he gets hit by the car and the car bounces off and he driver runs, or when he robs the delivery cart of food. They made me ridiculously happy. And there were some super sexy moments too, like when he kissed her in the rain for the first time.
The love story between them was aces, the plot was so-so with the vampires and the coven, but, I'll be honest, I'm not ready for plot. The characters were fabulous, the tension between them simmered, and all together, I feel pretty happy about the 5-6 hours I spent reading this book. It made me happy. Time well spent.
Thanks Ms. Cole. I will totally be reading more of you.
