From time to time the narrator would pause this wonderfully dreamlike quest so that we could look in on and eavesdrop on Jason Oliver, one of the story's key characters. We get to look in on a few other characters as well before continuing the dream quest. In this novel storytelling is beautifully intertwined with philosophy, with a convocation of important witnesses from both the past and the present serving as our models and examples of how we ought to live. The story told in The Hunks I Dreamed is our own story. It is more than just about dreaming. It is about awakening, about finding a new voice, about accepting, about loving.
this brilliantly narrated audiobook.
Author and narrator, Neville DeAngelou gives a reading the plunges
you into its durable literature regarding destiny and dreams. From the
likes of a demi-god to a modern-day gladiator, The Hunks I Dreamed,
gives its take on the differences of youth and mature masculinity.
Often given references to the likes modern-day Adonis’ Raphael Nadal
and other sports athletes, THID sometimes reads like a comparison
between Socrates and Plato.
THID plays to a series of short stories with totally different story lines
that goes far beyond its title. Its told with great sound effects and an
improvisation that its author gives that comes across as a genius poet.
[I would love to hear DeAngelou narrate a dark “Jack the Ripper” style
novel]. However, THID does have several funny moments (ie...Chapter
10) when narrating the car accident between and young man named
Jason and his passenger.
Through admission, at times it does get a little jumbled for me with
the paraphrases between “destiny and dreams”. But it all comes into
balance by the closing act, when describing the dreams of lifes journey
and its age progression along the way. In some areas of the book, I
felt as if I was listening to the classic “The Odyssey” by Homer--which
would even make the great Ulysses tingle with a nod of acceptance.
The real hero in this book is its author/narrator DeAngelou whose
timing and rhapsody makes you feel as if you’re in an audience
listening to a sold-out one man’s show. This reading is ideal for literally
and philosophy connoisseurs.
