This was my first time trying one of Hunt A Killer's one-and-done games and I loved it. It's considered "easy", but I worked alone and it took me a couple hours to solve it conclusively. It takes time to thoroughly examine all the evidence, crack some codes for more evidence, follow timelines, check alibis, etc. I had an early hunch, but I followed the evidence until I knew with certainty that I had zeroed in on the right suspect. Even when you know you've solved it, there's still a thrill in opening the solution envelope to validate your investigatory skills. Highly recommend.

I have a pretty cool mix of friends who are either true crime junkies like myself and/or cops (and their spouses). We are ALL true game junkies and love games of all kinds. Co-op, competitive, mystery solving, deck building, board games, card games, dice games.. you name it we play it! There is always a new game appearing at our table. We also love escape rooms, but during COVID times we haven't been able to do any, so we decided to check this out as a sort of combo of the two!

We played with 5 adults and one 12 year old and it took us about 90 mins (we really like to discuss and argue lol). We were very impressed with the materials we were provided, and found the difficulty level to be appropriate. We did use 2 clues at the very end (and we only used 2 because the first one we revealed told us something we were already certain of/paying attention to). Some of us at the table had already arrived at the correct conclusion, but the clue confirmed our suspicions. So, in the end we solved the murder, had a great time as a group AND decided we'd all like to split a monthly subscription box to continue to play in the future.

As for replay... well, unless it's been a really long time and you have a bad memory, you're probably not going to replay this. But again, we had a great time and I definitely consider this good value for our money. Especially when you consider comparable options you can't do at your own home and their expense, expense for sitters, travel, etc. We would definitely recommend and this is a great primer to try out the game without having to subscribe (but be forewarned, you may want to when you're done!)

My two biggest complaints with this product:
* Amazon shipped it with no outer box, just a shipping sticker on the shrink wrapped retail box. Thankfully it only suffered minor cosmetic damage, but your delivery person might not be as delicate with it!
* A few of the puzzles are Caesar shift cyphers, except they shift the wrong way. Typically a +1 shift turns an A into a B, but the puzzles assume a +1 shift turns an A into a Z. They do mention this explicitly and tutorized it, but because it's so backwards it did trip me up a few times.

That said, the production quality of this game is top notch. Besides the rules pamphlet and the solution envelope, everything in the box is evidence you've been given to solve a murder. There's even a pouch with a combination lock containing what must be more clues! That said, 90% of what's in the box is just documents, which at first seemed disappointing, but half an hour into it with piles of documents all around me I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel like a detective.

The documents are also great props by themselves - you've got newspaper clippings, photos, pages from two different notebooks, printed pages gathered from various people - and more. They're all made of different types and thicknesses of paper and do a good, but not perfect job of feeling like the real thing. They do a great job of making each document feel distinct which really adds to the immersion.

There's no need to to mark or damage any of the game materials (Even the solution envelope is sealed with just a dot of flexible glue), so it's easy to reset to initial condition and give it to a friend. It should be obvious from the description, but you can't replay this game. Once you've figured out who did it, that's it.

After doing a few really terrible at home escape rooms, I found Death at the Dive Bar and it was absolutely amazing!
The other at home escape rooms were terribly difficult. And I want to say me and my well seasoned escape room friends aren't very bright, but the clues were impossible to figure out without guidance! The story was good but the game would jump from A to M and it made no sense how it got there. The website for hints was difficult to navigate and overall, it was more frustrating than fun.

That said, Death at the Dive Bar was like a breath of fresh air! The story was good and we managed to figure it out while only needing one tiny hint. The website to get the hints was also very straight forward, though the password to get into it was super annoying (try a zero instead of an o).

The instructions were well written, as was the story.

What really stood out about this set were the clues! They were all printed on different types of materials so it felt real! Newspaper clippings, bar menus, bags, legal documents.. It was very well made! They didn't skimp on the materials! My friends were also impressed. The entire thing probably took us (2 people) about 1-2 hours, but we were taking our time admiring over everything. We definitely had fun!

Even better was that nothing needed to be ripped when going through it so I was able to box everything up and hand it to my other friends for them to try. (They also really enjoyed it)

10/10 absolutely would recommend! I hope this same company makes more!

"Death at the Dive bar". This one is marked 1/5 easy. Spent one afternoon playing this with my mom. Although it's one of the easier ones, it still took us a good couple of hours to solve.
If you're really good at cyphers and puzzles and get annoyed with the easy games, then pass on this, but if you enjoy sitting down and relaxing with a good mystery that's fun and not too taxing on the grey matter, then I recommend this one!

I like that this brand has some puzzles to work on (like an escape room), but also includes a cohesive story-line and murder to solve. It also includes good quality props that, if you wanted, you could use in real-life (if you don't donate or regift the game after). There are a couple of red herrings so you don't solve this one too quickly.
The cast of characters in this edition is great! I can really imagine these are real people, and this is a real case to solve. This is my kind of game to play while sitting down with a friend and a glass of wine.

Really disappointed and unimpressed. Theres also no analytical or detective skills needed, just shifting codes and letters, which even a 5 year old could solve. No "mystery" element whatsoever

The killer and motive is quite obvious within minutes of starting the game. The characters are all very bland and add no empathy or desire to solve the murder.

This has been both the most expensive and least enjoyable murder mystery box I've ever purchased. If you're a fan of these types of games please save yourself the hassle and buy a box from "hidden games" or "idventure".
