The only downside is that it of course is a one-time game. I'll have to look for someone to exchange with!
The puzzles are fun too, we had to use hints a couple of times.
Used some nice suspenseful background music to go along with the mystery
Overall, had a great time ...
AGE:
It would not be inappropriate to play with younger children around since none of the materials or content is especially graphic. However, those playing need to be able to focus on details and consider multiple elements simultaneously, so it would be best to play with adolescents and adults.
EXPERIENCE/SKILL:
Mystery at Magnolia Gardens was the first game of this kind that we have played. It was challenging enough to be fun, but not frustrating.
NUMBER OF PEOPLE:
Two people seemed like the perfect number, but it could be played solo or with more people. Although you could play it with a larger group, I personally would limit it to 4-6 people depending on who you're playing with.
TIME:
We solved this in about 90-120 minutes with a relaxed - yet intentional - approach. We spent more time considering the culprit, reexamining materials, making a timeline, and taking notes than was really necessary. Once you get far enough, you will have a pretty good idea of who did it, especially since there are a few ways of figuring out who it was. However, it was fun to eliminate other suspects and talk about all possibilities. If you want to go through all of the materials at an average pace while discussing possibilities with someone, 60-90 minutes is pretty reasonable.
MATERIALS:
The materials were clever and seemed to be well-made with one exception. The lock was a bit finicky, so we thought we had the wrong combination at first, but it eventually worked. Also, we took notes using our own paper, so we can pass the game on in "like new" condition.
PRICE/REPLAY:
It was more expensive than I would have liked, especially for a game you would not want to play again, but it gave us a nice "night in" that was a comparable price to an outing and gas. Since we can give the game to someone else to play, I see the price as being $30 per purchase, but not $30 per play. I'm glad I bought it.
Top reviews from other countries
Also the culprit was way too obvious and I spent longer trying to work out the extra clues that had nothing to do with the culprit. There’s one piece of evidence that gives it away really quickly once you get to it. Would have been better if it was staged that you couldn’t find that till finding everything else or the evidence was scattered through out rather than an obvious piece of evidence. I’d try another one but parts of this let it down.
Meh: Photos are cartoons instead of realistic photos.
Con: Price point! Depending on when and which you buy, a full seasoned box set may be cheaper.
Right now, Unsolved Case Files and Hunt A Killer are the 2 main brands I go to for such armchair mystery investigation games ;-)
