Based on Tom Clancy's bestseller, directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard) and starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER sweats with high-tech anxiety and the tension of men who hold Doomsday in their hands. A new technologically-superior Soviet nuclear sub, the Red October, is heading for the U.S. coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius (Connery). The American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack. A lone CIA analyst (Baldwin) has a different idea: he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it - because the entire Russian naval and air commands are trying to find him, too. The hunt is on!

Jack Ryan is played here by Alec Baldwin with a 'newbie' eagerness that I don't think Harrison Ford could have mustered. For this 'Jack Ryan', Baldwin was definitely the better choice. Excellence from James Earl Jones, Richard Jordan, Fred Dalton Thompson, and Joss Ackland (the evil De Nomolo from 'Bill and Ted') as the Soviet Ambassador, all give a gravitas to the story that turns up the suspense. With these heavyweights on the scene, we fully get it that the fate of the world is at stake. And even more good stuff from Scott Glenn and Courtney Vance, the canny American naval officers who give 'The Schoolmaster' a run for his money. Sam Neill is also good as the Soviet second-in-command, whose faith in the brilliance of Captain Ramius is tested. (You know, this guy Neill has quietly amassed a very big career. He's starred in some top movies -- Red October, Jurassic Park, The Piano, Cry in the Dark.)
The movie is just so totally excellent. Virtually flawless direction by John McTiernan ('Lethal Weapon') as the story jumps back and forth between the Russians and the Americans. It really adds to the enjoyment if you can follow the strategy and submarine tactics.
It's a shame that McTiernan never directed Tom Clancy's 'Red Storm Rising.' He would have knocked it over the rainbow. So instead, we've got 'Red October' as the best Tom Clancy story on film.
This is an excellent story based on a novel written by Tom Clancy. To top it off the film features a strong cast of actors and it is directed well. It is one of my favorite movies with the character of Jack Ryan. The book was excellent and this film follows the book very closely.
I strongly recommend this film. I have probably watched it 5 times. This is a good film to have in your library of films. It features great acting and a good story line.
This was one of Tom Clancy's best books and the movie version was created in a very realistic and entertaining way.
This is a good film that you should have in your video library.
