When I saw my first holiday pantomime 10 years ago at People's Light & Theatre in Philly I fell in love. Think children's theatre meets Saturday Night Live meets Monty Python. Fairy tales and familiar stories serve as the basis for fun, transvestitism, love conquers all and the triumph of good over evil. No serious drama here just an evening of ribald booing, hissing and hero cheering.
British Pantomimes (Pantos) have been a holiday tradition for over 200 years and EVERBODY gets in the act from grandparents, parents to kids. Pantos differ from the American concept of whiteface miming and should by all counts have caught on here in the States but..... alas.
Paul Harris' book is a readible and practical introduction which could serve as a novices'only book of instruction. All the performance conventions are here from "Oh no you can't, Oh yes I can etc. etc." to "Look behind you" or "Don't go in there!" and the traditional Dame (always played by men) plus enough pointers to getting amateurs started.
Still not convinced? Consider that Julie Andrews got her start (with Cinderella if you can believe it)performing in pantos. Elton John, John Inman ("Are you free Captain Peacock?)and Jack Wilde (Artful Dodger) have all strutted their stuff in pantos.
So BUY THIS BOOK and "Look out behind you!"
