I love me a good mafia book so when I heard that Blaire Drake was writing one all I could think was gimme gimme gimme! Blaire's Hunter definitely delivered on every count - it was dark, suspenseful, sexy and had turns that kept me glued to the pages.

Hunter is a second-chance romance... with a little assassination attempt on the side 😉! Doesn't sound too romantic... but really, this is the mafi what were you expecting? Things can't be all rainbows and unicorns! Adriana is the princess of the Romano mafia family. She grew up with Carlo ‘Hunter’ Rosso always protecting her, always there for her - and she loved him with all of her heart. But the last time she saw him she was 13 and he was 15. You see, her dad... well he's a bastard. And he decided to sell Adriana's body to pay off a debt. (That's who you always picture as a loving father, huh?) That night her mom, Alexandria took her and ran off... leaving no trace behind.

Now ten years later Hunter has shown up in sunny California, not to reacquaint himself with his lost love Addy, but because he was sent by her father to KILL her. Without even grasping that she is ALIVE and he has mourned her for nothing all these years - he creeps into her house to hold a gun to her head. What will happen between them now? Is Addy safe with Hunter? Is the boy she loved still in there somewhere? Or is he all mafia assassin now? Will sweet childhood love get a second chance?

I was sucked right into the twists and turns of this mafia book. I loved everything about Addy and Hunter - their relationship as children and the shaky ground they stand on today. Can he be trusted? Can he trust himself? It made me root even harder for them because there was always that little bit of doubt in my mind.

The concept of this book was intriguing but the execution was lacking. Adriana was a mafia princess and next in line to head the family. Hunter is sent by her father to kill her after he discovers she is still alive after 10 years of being in hiding. They were best friends when she left and Hunter is devastated that she never let him know she was alive. The story lost me when Adriana would throw the most unrealistic tantrums known to man and then demand that Hunter respect her because she would rule the family. She would lash out when she was hungry, tired or for any reason. She knowingly tried to hurt him and blamed for all of her life's woes. It was just too much to take after a while. Hunter did keep a big secret from her, but after the way she acted and reacted to news, I couldn't blame him. I have a hard time trying to believe she could lead a family, let alone get her cat to behave.

In the mafia, family is everything; blood is the only thing that matters. For Adriana, though, her blood is exactly why she becomes a pawn in a power play, and for her safety, her mother, the mafia queen, hides her away from anyone who can harm her. But 10 years later, Adriana’s life is once again in jeopardy, and with her mother’s death, the only person she can trust is herself because the boy who had always protected her, cared for her, and fought her battles for her becomes the assassin whose been ordered to end her life, forcing both of them to figure out where his loyalty lies and if there’s anything left of the boy who loved her underneath the soulless monster that’s been created.

Hunter is a story of double crossing, lies, and manipulation – darkness and demons reign over all parts of the storyline, and it’s hard to tell who to trust and who’s willing to shoot you in the back. There’s a lot of history between the hunter and his prey that complicates not only Hunter’s mission but also the steps that need to be taken for Adriana to reclaim the empire that has always been hers.

Blaire Drake clearly illustrates Hunter’s tortured soul through his nightmares and fears. Being owned by a sadistic jerk and losing the one person who kept his heart alive turned Carlo into a cold-blooded killer. His demons run rampant and the only one who seems to quiet them is the one person he’s been told to kill. Hunter is a bit of a contradiction and the dual parts of his personality are showcased throughout the text as he makes decisions that both hurt and heal Adriana.

4.5 Mafia Princess Stars

Having been introduced to Blaire Drake by reading Dear Professor, I was somewhat expecting this book to have some of the same undertones. While it has sexy elements, this in my opinion is more romantic suspense and was written very well.

In this book, we get Adriana Romano a Mafioso Princess who's father has sold her to cover a debt...which of course her mother will not stand for. What they do next however, sets us up for the rest of the book. They disappear in the middle of the night leaving everything and everyone behind, including Addy's best friend Hunter Rosso.

For ten years he thought she was dead, but surprise surprise she's alive and well and he's sent to kill her by her own father no less. This for me is when the story started to get really interesting. These two reconnecting was its own magic. He has a job to do, but she's the girl he's always wanted. What is he supposed to do? She wants her best friend back and now he's the man that fills her dreams....

"I didn't want the boy I fell for. I wanted the man he was."

I loved how this book kept my attention and I was on the edge of my seat for most of it as the story was interwoven with that sense of mystery I expect from a book of this type. Would they be able to overcome the obstacles in front of them? Would Hunter follow his orders or listen to his heart? Can Addy live with the man he has become or will her love change him for the better?

Up until the end of the book I wasn't really sure what was going to happen and I especially LOVED that. I love it when I can't figure it out until the very end. I would highly recommend this book if you're looking for a romantic suspense that will keep you guessing until the very end!
