Since there was so much to favor about this book it was difficult for me as the reader to narrow down the features that stood out to me the most. However I am happy to confess that I was able to do so. I'll start with the plot. I loved the darker tone that is reflected within the background of the book. It's not only a sinful tone of a strong foundation that was left to be desired, but is exactly what I expect to find whenever I read any paranormal novel.
The romance in my opinion is as equally as important to the plot within the book and this romance did not disappoint. It was a bit of a rocky start between both Zane and Candi that I normally would consider a fault, but for this novel it just worked. The constant bickering and fighting to avoid the love that both characters shared with one another was not only entertaining but allowed for some deeper action to be present.
As for the author's writing style it's clear that Newell has an act for story telling. Her stories flow easy enough, but that darker depth and unique heritages of her characters makes me dive into her novels any chance that I can get and with modern-day readers I think that is important.
On a final note I would recommend reading this series in order. I didn't and you certainly do not have to so as I consider the books to be stand alone reads. However to be fair to both author and to series do read the books in order as this series is by far one of the best paranormal series on the market.
Zane Wolfe is a lone wolf. No ties to anyone or anything. He does have a woman he loves, Candi. But he won’t commit to her, won’t even spend the night at her house. He loves going to bars getting drunk and having fist fights. Candi has had it with him and tries to break it off.
Zane and Candi have a strange relationship, in my eyes, he goes his way and visits her when he wants some, and she just can’t resist him. She loves him. He hurts her, angers her, and makes her sad. He doesn’t like what he does, but he can’t help who he is.
Zane starts feeling achy. He’s not eating or sleeping, and he’s starting to notice changes to his body.
There’s a legend in Wolf Creek, or is it a curse? Talk about his family and what they become.
He decides he needs to figure out what’s going on, so he tells Candi he can’t see her for a while. This feels like a slap in face to her. She never thought she’d be desperate enough to trap him, but she was hoping for a future with Zane, with a family. So she tells him…
I loved this story. Zane was hot and sexy, and the love scenes were very hot. It was from Zane’s POV. I love when the Alpha hero tells the story. I know this is going in my re-read pile.
I was given a copy of this book By NetGalley for an honest review
If you're like me and commitment-phobe heroes make you cringe I think you'll find yourself in the same boat I was in. I wanted to think that it was because of Zane's secret but it seemed more just his personality and that didn't work for me. Once Candi brings in a good reason for him to commit even then he gets all wishy-washy but the process slowly starts.
What ultimately saved this one from a lower rating was that once they started sorting their stuff out I liked Candi and Zane together. They felt more real than most paranormal romance couples are and that made me want them to find their HEA ending. While it was flawed enough I almost gave up on it, I also felt like the latter half of the story was good enough that most readers might like it.
Notes: ARC received via NetGalley.
