Zane Wolfe is worried about how he seems to be changing, feeling and acting. He has had some flu like symptoms, woken up naked in the forest unaware of how he got there, had problems controlling his temper . . . he’s starting to worry that the local folklore might be right - could he be cursed to be a werewolf?
His girlfriend, Candi Brooks, has always been attracted to him and the chemistry between them is volatile, they’ve been together since High School and she’s never had eyes for anyone else. However, she’s getting fed up of his lack of commitment to their relationship, anger and seemingly insatiable appetite for sex but not really loving. As so many folks are saying, he really does need to grow up! Something else, however, is going on. She’s being stalked. Can Zane protect her - or is he the one she needs protecting from?
This is an intriguing paranormal romance with echoes of when Jacob discovered he was a werewolf in the Twilight saga by Stephanie Meyer, but only echoes. It is a totally different story with no vampires to be seen! The characters throughout the book are well developed. The dangers experienced at different times in the story are well portrayed, real page turners. Personally, I didn’t relate well to Zane as he seems so full of angst and turmoil he’s also at times very selfish, forgetting to be a caring and loving partner to Candi. I did like her and how she sticks up for herself with him. It is the second book in the series but I haven’t read the first and didn’t feel that I’d missed out by not doing so, this works as a standalone. If you enjoy paranormal romances this is another to add to your to be read pile!
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for letting me read an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Since there was so much to favor about this book it was difficult for me as the reader to narrow down the features that stood out to me the most. However I am happy to confess that I was able to do so. I'll start with the plot. I loved the darker tone that is reflected within the background of the book. It's not only a sinful tone of a strong foundation that was left to be desired, but is exactly what I expect to find whenever I read any paranormal novel.
The romance in my opinion is as equally as important to the plot within the book and this romance did not disappoint. It was a bit of a rocky start between both Zane and Candi that I normally would consider a fault, but for this novel it just worked. The constant bickering and fighting to avoid the love that both characters shared with one another was not only entertaining but allowed for some deeper action to be present.
As for the author's writing style it's clear that Newell has an act for story telling. Her stories flow easy enough, but that darker depth and unique heritages of her characters makes me dive into her novels any chance that I can get and with modern-day readers I think that is important.
On a final note I would recommend reading this series in order. I didn't and you certainly do not have to so as I consider the books to be stand alone reads. However to be fair to both author and to series do read the books in order as this series is by far one of the best paranormal series on the market.
