Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Even though the "In Love and War" stories feature the same characters, every story is a standalone adventure. Therefore, the stories may be read in any order. But if you prefer to read them as intended, the suggested reading order is as follows:
1. Evacuation Order
2. Dreaming of the Stars
3. Baptism of Fire
4. Graveyard Shift
5. Collision Course
6. Freedom's Horizon
7. Courting Trouble
8. Bullet Holes
9. Dead World
10. Double Cross
11. Hunter and Hunted
12. The Taste of Home
The first four stories are all prequels of sorts. The novella "Evacuation Order" introduces a very young Mikhail as well as Brian Mayhew during his time as a fleet captain and chronicles the destruction of Mikhail's homeworld. The novelette "Dreaming of the Stars" features Anjali and Mikhail as teenagers and shows what led them to join their respective militaries in the first place. The short story "Baptism of Fire" follows Anjali on her first mission with the Shakyri Corps. The novelette"Graveyard Shift", finally, is set in the same universe as the other "In Love and War" stories and features Mikhail as a supporting character during his time with the Special Commando Forces. Colonel Brian Mayhew, Mikhail's mentor and commander, as well as Captain Elijah Tyrone of the freighter Freedom's Horizon also appear.
The novelette "Collision Course" is the first story to feature Anjali and Mikhail as a couple and leads directly into the short novel "Freedom's Horizon", which is the longest of the "In Love and War" stories to date. If you want to skip the prequels, this is the ideal point to start. The remaining "In Love and War" stories - the short stories "Courting Trouble", "Bullet Holes" and "Double Cross", the novelette "The Taste of Home" and the novellas "Dead World" and "Hunter and Hunted" - proceed in publication order, though they largely stand alone.
