Laurens de Groot gave up life as a detective after feeling dissatisfied with his purpose in life. Laurens flew to Australia from Holland to join the crew of the Sea Shepherd in its battle against Japanese whalers.
This is also a behind the scenes of the hit TV show "Whale Wars". This takes place in the first 3 seasons of the show and Laurens offers great insight into the mindset of the volunteers and the hardships they experienced.
The highlight for me was the scene when Laurens was on board the Ady Gil when it got smashed by the Japanese whaling ship. This book offers a unique perspective on this incident which is missing from media accounts or the TV show.
Lastly Laurens then pursues another adventure where he spies on the seal hunters in Namibia. This seal hunt is larger than the Canadian hunt but without any of the controversy. Laurens essentially risked getting captured and potentially losing his life in order to document this inhumane hunt.
For a different perspective I also recommend "Whale Warrior" by Pete Bethune.
