Delivered On Friday, July 26, 2013. Review written early Sunday, October 6, 2013.

Hello,

I like this compass. It's a lot for the money.

That said, with light use, it's fading fast. It's only seen a couple uses outdoors; once was to test it and the next was on a hike. It did perform well.

However, this compass's markings and paint are easily worn (see picture). Before the marks are gone, I'll probably be ordering a better lensatic compass of more familiar configuration, with "hard marks" such as wires instead of depending on ink crosshairs.

It was carried in my pocket or belt, but *always* in a case. I would venture a guess that the ink would be completely worn away had I not cased it.

That's my main complaint.

The bezel does seem to be plastic, or just very cheap metal, but it works so I've got no complaints about that.

I bought this compass mostly to test the design, to see whether I like it better than the more standard design I'm familiar with. Had I had high expectations for this compass, I'd be more disappointed.

Overall, two stars. Had the crosshairs not worn, I'd have given it a solid five stars.

Regards,

Josh Smith

In addition to being handy to check one's general bearing, this compass also has a sighting window and a viewing prism to make very precise measurements of the bearing of landmarks. A bubble level ensures the compass is flat and free to rotate. The compass also comes with thumb ring, lanyard, and sturdy green canvas carrying pouch.

I feel this compass really deserves 4.5 stars. It is an outstanding value for a $10 compass. Solid & heavy, sturdy, all metal, good sights, the liquid (oil I think) dampening is great, the bubble level and screw hole on bottom for tripod mounting are excellent touches. Unlike many lensmatics, this one has it's lens in a scope that focuses on the side bezel edge of the compass rose for accurate readings. It comes with a cheap yet functional and durable-looking pouch w/ belt loop, all single-stitched seams appear tight, metal snap closure. Negatives: 1) it would have been nice if the markings between every 10 degrees would have had the 5 center line a little higher than the others to aid readability when counting degree tick marks, and 2) the thumb loop is a bit small, fine for my kids but I would prefer a little more room (but my big ol' thumb does fit). Because of these two annoyances, I could have rated this item a 4, but I saw a really stupid 1 rating and felt the extra 1 point would help offset an unfair review. It also came with a 16 page mini-manual. I will buy additional compasses for all our backpacks. This first one will be tested over this weekends Trail Life USA camp-out with my son.

There are a lot of cheaper K&R Meridian clones than this one, literally 20 or so available through Amazon Prime. Pay the extra $15 or so and get this one instead. While not completely metal, it's mostly metal, extremely solid and hefty, and is stable and accurate (learn to use a compass and learn to use the built in level).

The included pouch is kind of meh (about an inch or so oversized) but you can either stitch it up tighter yourself or keep the compass in a pouch in your pack or around your neck - you're carrying this thing with you to use it in the field, not to save it like some heirloom, right?

I've owned a number of engineering compasses, this is by far the nicest. A bargain at the price. What I didn't notice when I bought it is that the bottom is tapped for a standard camera tripod mount, so could be used as a very economical transit. (Make certain that tripod is aluminum, it is after all a MAGNETIC compass. Probably need to use a brass mounting screw as well.)
Liquid dampening works very well. Metal body feels very solid and helps steady free hand use. What really impressed me was the sighting setup. Looking through notch at graticle line to line up distant object a very short glance down brings magnified degree reading into easy focus.
This is a lot more compass than I expected, especially for the price.

I picked this compass up to replace an older Military Lensatic that was removed from my pack on a camping trip. (I know it was intentional as they cut the Dummy Cord and removed the pouch.)

When this one arrived I took it out in the fields to give it a little work out and get used to it. I found I really liked the sighting hole in the side which allows a clear view of the dial while taking a heading. I found the compass also leveled quite nicely with the built in bubble.

Two days later I took it out into some scrublands to do some orienteering with some friends. Using this compass and a map I was easily able to find my way to all check points. It was actually easier to use for me than the old Military Issue one that vanished.

The only thing I would change on it would be to put an Inclinometer on it.
