I have read and re-read this book 3 times...THREE! Each time I am reduced to tears and I can simply not say enough good things about this book! Truly this is going to be one of those Must Read Series that I recommend to EVERYONE!
Ms.Ford has outdone herself with the writing of this book! The emotional connection you get to the characters is almost overwhelming in it's powerful depiction of PTSD and loss on the battlefield. This might be a novella, but it packs so much emotional content that it feels like a full length novel. I for one can hardly wait to see what comes next in the Spider Series!
Mike's story is heartbreaking and very timely. So many returning vets are suffering with PTSD and survivor's guilt, and Mike is their poster child. He refuses to believe he deserves to live a happy life after what he's seen and done in the Marines. He has pushed away his only salvation for most of the duration of his deployment, his love, Grace, and also their daughter.
This is an emotion-filled story of loss, redemption and most of all the healing power of love. I strongly recommend this book and look forward to the rest of this series by Ms. Ford.
The Huntsman is the prequel to this new series. I was excited just anticipating new material from Ms. Ford. I knew whatever the plot, it'd be well written, romantic and interesting, but I wasn't expecting the depth of emotion I felt reading this story. I was moved to tears more than once reading this story, but the love and hope I felt through her words overwhelmed the heartbreak and sorrow.
Jaycee takes us through a returning Marine's homefront battles with the demons of war, with PTSD, with guilt. But perhaps the biggest battle this Marine faced was the battle with himself and the battle to reclaim his life, the woman he loves and the daughter that he's never met.
This story lays a solid foundation for a series that promises to be full of gripping, moving stories of love and healing. I was already excited for this series, but having read The Huntsman, I now know it's one of my most anticipated reads of 2017.
This was a good book but I had a bit of a disconnect with the story that hasn't happened before when reading Jaycee Ford's other books. I think it was a bit sadder than I'm used to. Maybe it's because I have read a lot of books lately that involve soldiers returning home after their tours are finished and the difficulties they had with PTSD, guilt over being a survivor when so many others perished at the hands of our enemy and closing themselves off from the people who loved them. In fact, I had just completed a trilogy that was very similar to 'Huntsman' right before I read it.
I will give this a reread the first of the year and update if I feel differently.
An amazing prequel. Can't wait for the Spider Series!
