I was lured by the YouTube demos of the Hurom and the buzz on certain sites. Price-wise, it was a reach for a gamble. But today, I used it for the first time and I am not yet disappointed by its performance, although I am a bit disappointed that it's made of so much plastic. Also, if you're particularly finicky, I warn you in advance that it will stain instantly - that seems sort of irrelevant for a kitchen appliance, but if it matters to you, it does. It also means there's no way you can return it as "unused" if you are dissatisfied.
Mine came more or less assembled, although in having to re-assemble it for another run, it was no problem. The directions for how to put the carriage on the motor unit are weird and it's best done intuitively, as it will click into place when it's right. It's a bit heavy (at least, dense for its size), but the foot print is small.
It's QUIET!!!!!!! My Breville sounded a bit like a plane taking off - in conjunction with my Blendtec ICB7, I'm sure my neighbors hate when I'm in the kitchen. But this makes hardly any noise.
It's elegant in its operation. I was a little surprised that the pulp bucket included was so small and promptly replaced it with a big bowl - not necessary. Not much pulp comes out. I love that I don't have to stop and empty/clean the basket in the middle of a run. As with most juicers, I use the strategy of doing my soft things, then using hard veggies to clean behind it - it was comical, in this case, to see the slow extruding of the green leafy stuff, then the whipping ejection of carrots. My carrot juice is green enough that a) this method really works to "clean up" behind the soft veggies and b) if you want something pure, you may still want to do an interim clean. I use the carrot juice as a chaser for the green juice, so it didn't matter to me if there was a little mixing.
The pulp is pretty dry. I don't think I could get another run from it. And, it's actually pulpy... my Breville would still have chunks of things in the pulp, which I would have to pull out for the cracker base. There are no chunks, here.
Clean-up was a non-event. There was very little of anything in the contraption. I think a funky design bit which I can imagine being a pain down the road is the rubber gasket they use to divert the juice from the pulp ejection. You can pull it out - and it's necessary, in order to clean any little bit of pulp which didn't make it out (there's a special end on the brush for this, kind of like a flat toothpick). I can see that this seal may degrade with time, requiring replacement.
If you have been using a Breville or something similar, you will be shocked at how small the opening is. It may require more prep than you are used to, depending on what your mainstays are. I fed a whole carrot at a time, but I had to chop the beet. I would also have to chop cucumbers. However, this didn't feel onerous and for just about every other juicer, you're used to this.
I have previously used a Champion augur juicer and this beats the pants off that one. The Champion heated up quickly, heating the juice and pulp, and I would often have to stop mid-run and clean the augur, which would get gunked up. So far, this design seems to hold nothing in the augur for that to happen; I don't know if that's a function of the vertical design or some other element (it is a much fatter augur), but I was happy not to have that problem. The motor base warmed during my use, but I did not notice an appreciable increase in the juice temperature. The manufacturer does say that the machine should not be used continuously for more than 30 minutes, which is well within reason unless you are juicing for commercial purposes or a family of 12.
In general, I am very satisfied with the machine. It is not as cool looking as my Breville - the white plastic is a bit heinous, really... why didn't they do a stainless steel finish?!, but that just means I'll store it in the cabinet instead of on the counter.
One other thing is that I find this machine much more user-friendly for making fresh juice for one. Previously, the inconvenience of the event made me run larger batches that I would refrigerate, which I know somewhat defeats the purpose, but the whole process was just too much of a production to make a glass. With the Hurom, I already feel that will be much easier and therefore more likely.
UPDATE: After not much use, I, too, began to see the problems that others report. My low-pulp strainer basket is cracked all over, the bottom gaskets leak profusely with normal use, and worst, my "juice" is all pulp, requiring me to manually strain it after "juicing". The waste is tremendous, and the pulp which is extruded is getting wetter and wetter. I have tried all normal problem solving, like alternating greens with hard stuff, cleaning the incredibly small slot which gets easily and quickly clogged by any kind of fiberous stuff throughout the juicing, etc. It has become way too frustrating to use and so I am looking to re-buy the centrifugal juicer I cavalierly sold once I bought this. When I was interning with Tree of Life, they used a GreenStar for wheat grass and I also used it for all my greens: I never once had a problem with it, and it was just as quick as this Hurom for greens. I am so disappointed with this item - I spent a lot of money on it based on the strength of reviews and promoters; I don't know if we all just got conned with its initial performance, which it does not sustain, or if we got conned by marketing. Either way, I feel conned!
Take the time to cut or tear leafy vegetables, and chop fibrous vegetables, into small pieces. Peel the hard rind off citrus fruits. This juicer is not designed to ingest citrus rinds. Citrus rinds will add a bitter, indigestible, and volatile oil to your juice. This juicer is designed to slowly squeeze with it's auger and not high speed chop and grind, like the serrated blade of a centrifugal juicer. Leave the pith (white part) intact as it contains a lot of nutritional value. Let the Hurom feed itself, when possible, with just a little push from the supplied pusher, when needed. The Hurom literaly sucks in, without pushing, most of the fruits and vegtables you insert, provided you've cut them up in small pieces. Following this procedure, I have not experienced any jams.
The ejected pulp is generally dry. It juices green leafy vegetables very dry, when you juice them with other fruits and vegetables in rotation. It doesn't do a good job juicing leafy vegetables alone and will clog. However, unlike most masticating juicers, the Hurom does an excellent job of juicing fruits.
The white plastic parts will stain, but this is normal, and will not affect performance. After a few months mold began to form along with excessive stain, and residue build-up. I found it necessary to soak the bowl parts, juicing screen, and the hopper base in OxyClean overnight to remove the stains, residue, and mold. The silicone wiper blades need to be removed by pushing inward and sliding them out of their slots for proper cleaning. The bowl silicone O ring needs be removed to clean out the mold that forms. Follow the instruction label on the product and do not pre-operate. Running it dry will cause the squeezing screw (auger) to create excessive friction rubbing against the screen and flake off. I always put something in the hopper, to be juiced, before I turn it on. I've sometimes found the bowl difficult to remove from the base. If this happens push the reverse button and run it in reverse for 3-5 seconds 2-3 times. If that fails line up the hopper to the open position and pry it off with a blunt butter knife.
The Hurom combines the jucing speed of a centrifugal with the high quaility juice making of a masticating juicer. The internet videos are great, but they are done in the interest of time limitations, and can be deceptive. Comparison videos and reviews indicate that twin screw and press juicers will have a greater yeild, if you have the time, and patience to use them. Used properly, as per the manufactures' instructions, the Hurom makes quality juicing, a greater a variety of fruits and vegetables, easier, and more convenient than any other juicer on the market.
Update 11/02/2011: Recently I noticed some cracks in the 1st generation white plastic screen. I upgraded to the new 3rd generation amber GE Ultem 8X harder crack resistant screen. I also had to upgraded to the new compatible bowl. The new bowl and screen have larger pulp ejection ports to better eject pulp, resist clogging, and provide a more pulp free juice. The screen was $40.00 and the bowl was $45.00. I also replaced the silicone wiper blades for $5.00.

Pros:
1. The juicer is very sturdy, the prats don't feel like they would break if you drop them
2. Very quiet running, there is a hum but its like microwave hum so wont disturb your partner when you make juice in the morning.
3. Easy to clean but not supper easy (pouring water through it will not clean it like the picture shows), very fiberish things make it very hard to clean like kale. Where the waste comes out it gets stuck in there when trying to clean. Again not impossible but would not call it extremely easy either.
4. It is price wise decent price for a juicer
5. Juice is pulpier if you like that, or you have to use a strainer if not, more pulpier then a centrifuge juicer
Cons:
1. The cups they give you don't fit snug to the side of the machine like they look like they should we just use measuring glasses at home.
2. Cleaning the waste area is a bit hard, you need to use something to get inside it to poke it out nothing horrible but takes a min to do
3. Juice leaks a little out the bottom, I am talking 3,4 drops not a lot but when we take the unit apart to clean there is always a few drops of juice on the bottom part. again so little but want to mention it.
4. Slow juicers are named slow for a reason, it does take longer to make juice with a slow juicer, this is good and bad I guess. More juice and better quality but at the expense of time. Be prepared to take 10 min to make a juice (cutting up veggies as you go, then cleaning after)
For us the pros outweigh the cons big time. All the cons listed are very minor things
using it, it is really fast. Surprisingly heavy for it small size. Come complete with pieces that insert inside each other.
Love it.
