This is one mean little blower! Recently my home AC inside blower motor fried. I took an old CD round table player that didn't work and cut the top off it. I mounted the fan to the panel and wired the fan to one side of the 240v switched power from the old fan. This little blower cooled and heated my house for 3 months while I decided what fan motor to use to replace the blown one! Now that my inside fan is replaced, this blower will go back out to the shed and go back into service as my dust collector on my wood lathe. Great little sucker/blower!
We got this for my stained glass studio. Soldering lead came generates fumes I'd rather not inhale. So we mounted this to the wall, vented it outside, installed flex hose with a metal end. With the flex hose I'm able to move the end to wherever I am soldering. This sucks all the fumes up and away to the outside. I never smell the solder fumes. Its also quiet enough when I'm using it I can still hear music or carry on a conversation easily while running. This works great in the application for which it was purchased.
The bearings in the motor on this fan require periodic lubrication with a non-petroleum-based lubricant. The manufacturer recommended a paraffin based lubrication to me: ZOOM-SPOUT OILER *THE ORIGINAL EXTENDS-RETRACTS 4oz. MO98 LUBRICATING OIL MO-98 (Amazon sells it). There are 2 tiny plastic tubes on the motor to insert the lubricant, so it seems the fan must be oriented such that those tubes point up. I don't want my house to burn down because I didn't crawl through the attic and lubricate the bathroom vent fan often enough, so I returned it and will instead use a "centrifugal" in-line fan instead, "Hurricane Inline Fan 4 in 171 CFM - 736570," which doesn't need periodic lubrication.
I bought 2 of these as exhaust fans to get adhesive and solvent fumes out my basement windows. Bolted to a piece of plywood they work fantastic to evacuate the air. On high you really pull the air. Dial them down for light ventilation. Quiet. Solidly built. Get the corresponding speed controller Amazon offers, it is wonderful.
Mounted in my computer room window for exhausting the air out ( I know, not what it was designed for) and much quieter than the blade style fan with a much smaller hole. Fabricated an outside air flapper so bugs won't come in when off. Also like the protective screen features on the inlet and outlets.
Intended use is for an exhaust fan. It blows well, and is quiet. But, as an exhaust fan, it does not have a good vacuum. Wanted to connect it to my Epilog laser to evacuate the smoke generated. Have not hooked it up yet, so I don't know if it will do the job or not.
This is a very solid unit. Construction and finish are very well done.
The noise level, for such a small volume of air, is relatively quiet.
As stated by others, the 4" port on the motor-side does not have a fitting for mounting vent tubing. This is irrelevant to my situation, but you should be aware.
