Hurtta makes well constructed products for dogs and I wanted to try this and compair it to the roughwear swamp cooling coat he has.
Hurtta is really geared for the active younger dog, but they need to realize that dogs age and are not discarded because of it, if anything we take further measures to protect them.
This has it's pros and cons,
The Pro's -
It's well made
Your pet gets much more coverage and protection from the heat,
the sinch around the neck allows you to close it tighter to keep the coolness inside without causing any discomfort around the neck.
The color starts to turn lighter as it dries and that's a great indicator for you.
The Top has an area to feed the harness through, although , I don't often use a harness with this since I don't want any pressure agaisnt my boy's chest in the heat and I do walk him early mornings when it's not in the 90's and late evenings when it's cooled a bit, but come the hot months this will be a life saver on short walks. 20 mins. He's 14 years old and has "MVD"
I walked him when it was 85 outside and checked him every 10 mins and he was cool to the touch under the coat.
We got very strange looks from people, "hehe" I actually felt terrible for their panting dog with no protection at all.
not really cons but can use improvement
It only stays cool for about an hour, and this was 85 and a strong wind outside "really depends on the heat and wind" more heat less wind mean less cooling effect and can become more of a danger. "so ,please monitor your pet"
2. The strap for the under-belly is very loose and doesn't tighten enough to cool as much as it should and it leaks quite a bit even though I ring it out perfectly, On the positive side, the fact that this cooling coat covers your pet's front and back quarters means that even though the strap is loose around the chest he/she is still cool but for some reason wet in that area. I think it may be because the coat works through evaperation and since that area is covered by the rest of the coat, it takes longer.
3. it's bulcky and unless your dog is on the larger size he/she may have problems moving around causing stress..
If your dog has a large chest and tall, odds are you won't have this problem, but ya never know until you try it.
My dog looks large but it's really because of his double coat. He actually looks very funny in it, I'll try to post a picture of him wearing it.. I'll start putting his cooling booties on tomorrow or the next hot day.
If you live in the midwest or AZ, I would carry around a 640z half frozen bottle of water for resoaking it after about an hour.
I carry a 32 oz bottle in my back pack for that purpose.but then again because of his age and heart condition I don't take him on long walks when it's that HOT out, in his younger years yes.
Oh, Humidity will cause less effectivness of this cooling coat, so watch for that if you live in the south.
In order for it to have the best effectivness air must be able to circulate under and over it.
I may try it with his Hurtta cooling vest or alternate them which I love.
This does get dirty very easily, we were out for a short time and aleardy a dark stain but it washed out quickly.
The roughwear swamp cooler has a much better fit around the entire coat and the flap on the bottom is where it should be on your pet closer to his/her chest. They both work the same way with the only difference is that the Hurtta cooling coat does give more coverage
Worth the price so my boy will enjoy his walks when it's otherwise to hot outside for his safety.
Buy them for all your dogs, best investment! AND please remember and tells other to NEVER EVER NEVER leave your dog in a car, even with the windows cracked or open all the way,,,,,,,,YOUR CAR is just a big metal box and the stress is not what a dog needs. Love them enough to leave them at home in the AC while you are out in the summer!! Thank you!!
