About the Author

Life is an extravaganza! Figuring out how to hang tough, and make the most of the wild ride, is the challenge. On my way to Oahu, to join the rock musician and high school drop-out I had married in Tijuana, I was nabbed as a runaway. Eventually, the police let me go, but the rock band broke up. Our next stop: Disney World, where we trained to be chefs. More education landed us in academia at The Ohio State University. For decades I researched, wrote, and spoke about a number of gloriously nerdy topics. Retired now, I’m still married to the same, sweet, guy and live with him near Palm Springs, California. I write the Jessica Huntington Desert Cities Mystery series set here in the Sonoran Desert, a spectacular place to ponder life’s mysteries while relishing the delights of the desert resort cities.

I just finished reading “A Dead Husband” by Anna Celeste Burke. This book was a suggested read by Anna’s sister Brenda Landy, who I work with. When I started this book, I had intended to read it a chapter at a time, and ended up reading it from cover to cover.
The main character, Jessica Huntington, is trying to figure out what to do with her life after catching her husband in bed with another woman. Staying with her old nanny Bernadette, now caretaker of Jessica’s childhood home in Rancho Mirage, she spends her time binge shopping and feeling sorry for herself, until she unintentionally gets involved in a murder.
Burke, not unlike Steinbeck, has a way of setting a panoramic scene with her words. I could envision in my mind what the characters looked like, and where they were. The author’s keen fashion sense, also helped to set the scene, as well as making me wish I had a black AMEX card so I could go shopping at Saks!
“A Dead Husband” is a deliciously captivating read, and definitely a book I would encourage people to enjoy!

From the first sentence, this tale holds the reader captive. Jessica Huntington is a flawed heroine, but endearing and even admirable in her resolve and resourcefulness. Like so many of us modern women hooked by consumer culture, Jessica resorts to "retail therapy" when things get hot and heavy. Unlike most of us, she has a Stanford law degree and knows how to make her Porsche growl approvingly. But she is still flummoxed, as we would all be, by a murder that hits too close to home. The twists and turns, the manias and maniacs, the attempt to figure out the difference between fantasy and reality: it's all there in "A Dead Husband." I especially enjoyed the author's use of dialogue, her depictions of California cuisine, and her deft descriptions of southern California's desert communities, its flora and fauna, its smells and sounds and textures. If you long for a trip to Palm Springs and its environs but don't have the time or money to do it, then "A Dead Husband" is just the thing. Highly enjoyable.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Love the Palm Springs/Rancho Mirage area and it was great fun to envision this story line being somewhat familiar with the setting. Colorful characters, found myself not putting this one down, and I was on a streak of BORING Kindle selections. Started the second book already, and so far, every bit as interesting. Look forward to more and more in the series.

I love Jessica! What is there not to love? She's intelligent, cherishes the finer things in life, celebrates her divorce with a party and suffers periodic panic attacks that force her to re-examine reality every now and then--a state she attempts to avoid by indulging in high end binge shopping trips.

Acknowledging she was letting her divorce 'send her over the edge', she tells 'St. Bernadette', her childhood family housekeeper turned confident , "I know I'm behaving badly right now...it's like I'm starting over again, but I'm 33 not 23 or 13 and I'm less clear than ever about what I want to be when I grow up." This isn't news to Bernadette who has spent more time with Jessica than Jessica's own parents.

Author Anna Celeste Burke invites readers into the upscale cosmos of newly divorced Stanford Law School graduate, Jessica Huntington, whose world plummets with the turn of the economy, a childless marriage and her cheating husband. Though angered by life's circumstances, she refuses to fall victim.

Life takes another unexpected turn when her best friend's husband is murdered. Jessica's fighter instinct kicks in when her friend pleads for her help. Jessica, with her 'cat pack's support, sets out to solve a murder!

Great dialogue and descriptive settings are so vivid that as reader, you become part of Jessica's cat pack equally as motivated to solve this murder mystery.

This is a fun read and I can't wait to read 'A Dead Sister' Ms.Burke's sequel to this novel.

Jessica Huntington is at a crossroads in her life. Her divorce would be final, if only she’d sign the papers. She has returned to her childhood home to ruminate, and to shop, and then shop some more. Whereas some people seek food for comfort, Jessica shops. That is until her friend Laura’s husband Roger is murdered and Jessica and her friends join forces to prove Laura’s innocence and discover the true culprit.

Burke has developed an interesting and eclectic cast of characters in Jessica’s friends and in the “bad” guys, too. As Laura’s attorney, Jessica launches her own investigation into Roger’s death and places herself and those close to her in harm’s way. As the tale unfolds, new theories and suspects come into play, building up to a suspenseful finale in which Roger’s murderer is revealed and the pieces all come together.
This book is part of a series but it is also a standalone novel. I look forward to reading more about Jessica and her escapades in A DEAD SISTER.

Quite an interesting group of people surrounds the main character Jessica Huntington. There’s Bernadette, her former nanny, who takes in Jessica because she doesn’t want to return home after finding her husband in bed with another woman. Her close friend Tommy, who recently outs himself and is now searching for love, is a support to Jessica. I can’t forget to mention her cheating husband Jim Harper.

To cope with her problems Jessica resorts to retail therapy. Haven’t we all done that? Jessica is a character you’ll care about despite, or maybe because of, her flaws.

There’s lots of action in this mystery and great plot twists. I adore mysteries and this is a great one. Another bonus, the author’s description of Palm Springs makes you feel as if you were there. A free trip! Finally, you may wonder, is Jessica’s husband dead? You’ll have to read the book to find out.
