Hush ($12.95 paperback original; Dec.; 144 pp.; 0-87573-084-1): A new translation of nearly a hundred poems by the 13th- century Sufi mystic whose work has undergone an immense revival in the West during the last decade. Best known for his love poetry, Rumi was actually a theologian, and most of his verse is explicitly religious in both tone and content, also heavily mystical in the manner of St. John of the Cross. Most of the quatrains take the form of either a direct address to God (I am your servant / of your lips full of laughter. / You are the source of life. / You are the elixir of immortality) or an exposition of his nature (To Love is to reach God), while many of the odes offer homage to Rumis great friend, Shams of Tabriz (Shams of Tabriz / you are like the Sun, / for the cloud of speech, / When you rise, / your countenance / evaporates all dialogue), the Sufi dervish who introduced Rumi to the techniques of ecstatic dancing and prayer. Iranian-born translator Shivas introduction is concise and helpful andin spite of its absurd contention that Rumi is now the best read poet in Americaoffers an intelligent evaluation of the authors life and work. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. "...These verses are not just meant for the libraries or the classrooms of academia. They are meant to be recited by human lovers and lovers of God. The passion of Rumi expressed in this book by Shahram Shiva will restore the exultation of spirit in your Being. This passion is holy and it will heal you..." --Deepak Chopra, author of How to Know God and several NY Times Bestsellers

but once you read this you will become one too. Enjoy!
So even if you do not connect with a higher power, even if you are not Muslim, you will still find his works to be remarkable. They are so incredible to me I actually plan on getting one of his poems inked on my side. I am sure some people will find that crazy, but it merely shows how his work has touched me.
