Top Customer Reviews
There are some pros and cons to this saw as with all things.
Here's what I like. It's easy to operate and maintain. Accessibility of the under-cowel components such as the air filter, spark plug, and clutch housing is a no-brainer. It starts easy. In fact, you really don't need the pressure valve. It "pops" after a few short and fast pulls. Remember, once the saw "pops" with the choke, un-choke it and pull it again. You do not need to warm a two stroke with the choke on like you would a 4 stroke engine. Attempting to warm with the choke is the biggest cause of two stroke engine flooding.
Here's what I do not like. The low/hi mixture settings are limited by EPA regulations; a complete and total joke. If you remove the controls to optimize your settings, the warranty is void. But, I think it's better to do that than cook engine from lean settings. There aren't enough chainsaws running in any given period of the day to justify this regulation. So if you are a casual user, really pay attention to the break in procedures. Since the saws run lean, you need to make sure to break them in with extra care. If you use them much more frequently, remove the EPA limiters and richen out the hi/low mix, otherwise you will cook your engine.
Overall this is a great saw. The chisel chains do well for heavier applications. Be careful of kickback with these style chains. You can get low-kick back chains from any dealer. It's all a matter of personal preference.
I have outfitted my saw with an Oregon 20" Bar, chain, and rim sprocket. Once again this is a personal preference issue. The power head of the 455 is plenty and the applications many. If you are a causal user of this saw, talk with the folks at the saw shops for tips and ideas. They are a repository of knowledge and can help you make informed decisions about your saw.
Update....8/8/16 this thing while not a "pro" saw will most certainly fulfill even the crustiest customers expectations! I've run this thing through 11 cords of wood and ZERO issues. I do however baby my saws...meaning I do the required maintenance on em like clockwork. That said this saw or a comparable Stihl will be awesome period! Again I'll reiterate; if you treat this saw well it'll treat you the same"
A week later. Seller sent a suggested repair company. We took the saw to the repair company and they said since the saw wasn't purchased through them they couldn't support the warranty, wanted paperwork showing the purchase date (Amazon order form they wouldn't accept), paperwork with serial #, etc. The company says the problem was the carburetor which wouldn't be covered under the warranty anyway. This saw never correctly worked on day one (5 min of operation). Do not purchase through Amazon.
1) This saw is easy to start
2) This saw has more than enough power for almost any tree that you will cut. (Last weekend I cut a fir tree that was over 100' tall and was over 3' in diameter that had fallen across the road. In addition the I had to cut the oak that the fir fell on which was as tall but with a slightly smaller diameter this saw handled both with no problem)
3) This saw is intuitive to use.
4) I sometimes cut trees with someone who swears by Stihl, yet he always shows up with his Husqvarna 460 as one of his 2 saws.
5) It seems to me that the Husqvarna is easier to start, has fewer problems and is less expensive than the Stihl.
1) This is a heavier saw...
As a further endorsement of this saw, I bought a second 455 Rancher 4 months after the first
I highly recommend this saw.
I own two Husqy saws. The 455 Rancher and the 435. The 455 is 4 times the saw that the 435 is. The 435 is smaller and easier to handle but the 455 will take 1/4 of the time to make the same cut as the 435. The 455 has more torque and more horsepower which equates to quicker cutting times.
If you are trying to decide whether or not to spend that extra $175 on the 455, don't hesitate. This is a great saw. Starts every time. Almost indestructible.
One caution though.......MAKE SURE NOT TO ENGAGE THE CHAIN BRAKE AND TAKE THE CHAIN BRAKE/CLUTCH COVER OFF!
The only negative remark I can leave is that my saw had a cold weather knock-out on the cover instead of the removable and replaceable plug. It cost me an additional 10 bucks to have one shipped to my home.
