This popping sound is very annoying so I asked the tech what could I do to resolve this concern.
So in a long discussion with the Hydor tech, he recommended either extending the cycling of the Smartwave Controller so there will be more quiet time between each annoying pop sound, not acceptable to me, or upgrade to the Wavemaker 2 / Wavemaker 4 with a Koralia 12VDC pump. The tech responded that all their DC circulation pumps do not have the popping issue because DC always runs in the correct direction.
Now let me add if you have a very loud tank or a tank in a loud area, you might not care about the popping sound, so you will enjoy the benefit of these pumps with the Smartwave Controller.
So, what if you didn't purchase or don't want to use the advanced features of a Smartwave Controller, well, let's just say all is actually very good. After the pumps are running, they are quiet with a small amount of low tone hum, barely audible, and therefore, I would say a good purchase for "non-controller based" usage.
I will add that Hydor support was very quick to pickup the phone and Hydor was very helpful and pleasant.
Overall design seems good and I do like the fact that you can remove the cover so you can properly clean the blades when needed. If the motor works as well as the product looks then I am expecting them to be very good purchases. I will keep my post updated as time goes past.
Overall: I am giving this a five-star rating based on my criteria below. This pump is impressive and I think the price is fair for the quality. If you have any questions or comments both positive and negative, please feel free to ask in the comments. I will try to respond. If you found my review helpful or lacking also let me know. I hope this helps you with your decision making process.
-- How I rate --
5 Stars: Works exactly as advertised, is a good value at the price point purchased, would buy again or recommend to a friend.
4 Stars: Works mostly as advertised, fit/finish are what you'd expect when purchasing this type of product, might have a minor flaw.
3 Stars: Generally works but it may not be a good value at the price point or might like to see changes / improvements.
2 Stars: Barely works but can be made useful if you try.
1 Star: Useless, does not perform its intended function whatsoever and is generally a waste of money, sending it back.
I say it is just ok because I wish I would have gone with the Nano 425 instead. the flow is about the same but the equipment is much smaller. I also own 2 of the nanos for smaller tanks and they work great.
Yes, it moves water. But it is big and clunky for the low flow (which i desired).
