The pump is solidly built, and I love the magnetic "clips" or suction cups or whatever they're calling them. There's a suction cup on the pump that isn't actually in use when using the magnets (which are removable). I actually love this because it allows the pump to be very easily positioned without having to go through the process of peeling off a suction cup. Just pull of the exterior part of the "clip" and you can move the pump around extremely easily. Put the clip back and now you're set.
My only reason for a 4-star review is that, occasionally, this thing can be extremely loud. I haven't quite figured out why it happens - I think it might be that the current gets a little turbulent and can cause some vibration. This is somewhat easily fixed with repositioning, and for the last day or so I've got in a position that makes it whisper quiet. However, when I first installed it, it would start off quiet and then gradually get louder and louder over the following hours until it was by far the loudest item in my tank (and I've got a pretty powerful air pump as well as an external canister). If you buy one of these and find this is a problem, try repositioning it, moving the cord, etc. until you can get it to work.
All that being said, I would happily buy another one of these pumps. I'm very happy with the quality and the noise level once it's positioned.
The unit is small, about the size of a large egg. It comes with a magnet for the outside of the tank. It also has a cord protector but it is really meant to be used only if you have livestock that may chew through the cord. Packaging was great and setup was easy. Just play with placement until you find the perfect spot. I had to move my unit from the left to the right side of the tank and that made a big difference.
This powerhead is very quiet. The magnet makes it very easy to position it in the tank and beats all those suction cups. In addition, it creates no vibration and is very steady.
Overall I am very pleased with my purchase. I gave it 4 stars just because this nano 425 was rated for tanks bigger than a 10 gallon but I do not think that is too accurate.
I did manage to crack through a 10 gallon with the magnets. Be very careful when repositioning. It was totally my fault so no stars lost. I lifted up on the magnet on the outside of the tank, and it slipped from my fingers and snapped back against the glass, causing it to crack. The tank still worked fine, and would have been easy enough to replace just the broken pane, but I didn't want to risk it and I just replaced the whole thing. I suspect the thickness of the glass played a huge role the crack occurring, but I also expect other people are using these in small tanks with thin glass as well, so watch out if this is the case for you too.
I would totally recommend this to any aquarists, but I would caution them from moving the Hydor Koralia once it is installed, as you risk issues with the magnet as I had. Total user error though, so also totally avoidable and shouldn't cause any concern to potential buyers.
My fish seem to enjoy it as well. I have two zebra danios that like to swim in the current it creates. They loop around the tank in circles all day.
The only thing that can be a pain is if you have live plants that the fish like to pull on. I have dwarf hair grass I have been working on growing and it never fails that I find clumps of it in the fan everyday. It at least lets me know it is doing a great job.
