Hydraulic directional control valves allow fluid flow into different paths from one or more sources for controlling the start, stop, and direction of flow in a hydraulic circuit. Also called a hydraulic flow control valve, the hydraulic directional control valve permits and restricts flow using either spools, poppets, or rotary slides. Spool-type directional control valves are widely used because they can be shifted to two, three, or more positions for routing fluid between different combinations of inlet and outlet ports.

Hydraulic directional control valves are differentiated by two characteristics: position and way. Position refers to the number of distinct flow paths the valve can provide, and way is the number of ports. Additionally, spool-type valves often include spool number in the description of the product to indicate the number of passageways within the valve. An example description would be 1 spool, 4 position, 4 way hydraulic control valve. Of the spool-type hydraulic control valve, a 1 or 2 spool valve is most common, although 3 spool, 4 spool, and 5 spool valves are available. Similarly, the 3 position, 4 way hydraulic directional control valve is the most common.
