Why spend $200 on what are basically 2 fancy water jugs? Well, after a week or so of the 1/2 gallon size, I found that I was still filling it twice a day with water. I also knew that I had several extended road trips coming up for work where I will be pulling overnights, and coffee would be at a premium, so my plan was to take along a 1/2 gallon of coffee and a gallon of water. After my first trip, I knew I made the right decision.
I pre-heated the 64oz, then filled it with steaming hot coffee around 4pm the first afternoon, and enjoyed delicious cold-brewed, dark roast through the night. For the first 3 hours or so, I had to let it sit for a bit after pouring because it was uncomfortably hot. Getting back to the hotel at 7 in the morning, I found that while it wasn't super hot, the last couple of cups were still enjoyable (around the temp where you would be asking the waiter for a "warm-up"). Unfortunately, for the next 3 days (nights), I had to drink hotel coffee, which wasn't nearly as good, but it was hot. The gallon jug had no problem keeping most of its' ice throughout the night. The biggest issue with these 2 big boys was all the nature calls...lol
Enough story telling...Let's get to the other stuff.
Build Quality: Excellent. The strap seems very thick and sturdy and is very convenient for carrying. The threads on both the large and small opening are pretty coarse, in that it doesn't take many turns to put on or take off, but I have witnessed absolutely no signs of leakage. As far as the rest of the jug, the finish is even and looks great.
Performance: The thermal performance of these does not quite seem to be as good as the regular wide-mouth water bottles I have, but I haven't done any testing. I use 2" ice cubes which definitely last longer, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N33EYQV/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (see my review there).
Before I left the first afternoon, I crammed as many of these monster cubes into the gallon jug, then topped off with refrigerated water. Starting the following morning (15 hours later), I would top it off with room-temp water. The original cubes lasted almost through the second night, so about 40 hours or so. I refilled it one more time with ice, which lasted me the rest of a 4 day trip. Considering I drank from it a lot, and added 75 degree water, I was very happy with the performance. Since I take the larger one with me to the office every day, I don't know that I'll ever do an official test, but I can tell you that 4 of the large cubes keep my water ice cold all day at the office.
Weight: Yes, they are probably more than you want to lug around when you go jogging, grocery shopping, or riding your bike, but that's not the role they were designed for. These are put in your car, carry to the picnic table, or set it next to the grill items. I mean, I've seen people complaining that they're too heavy, but geez, a gallon of water is 8 lbs by itself.
There are only 2 things that I think can be improved, and I've already fixed the first. The smaller cap is not captive, and the thought of it rolling down a cliff or floating off down the river made me uneasy. My solution: I had a couple of GoPro camera leashes that weren't doing anything better, so I rigged up a line with a swivel in it and use it to keep my cap safe.
The other item I wish I could purchase would be a silicone boot for these. I found that when carrying several things I tend to knock the jugs against walls, counters, large dogs, and my wife (which resulted in a bruise on her knee and a 5 minute lecture on watching where I'm going...lol). The finish has held up, but knowing me, I'm sure I can find its' limit.
TL;DR If you don't mind the initial hit to your wallet, you won't regret purchasing either size of these jugs.
Hope this helps...
All kidding aside, all I can say is WOW, the ice lasts one Hell of a lot longer than my old ice jug, I put ice cubes and water in it on Mon for my day trip to the VA,
Topped it off with ice before I left on my run Tues morning, and have been topping it off with ice everyday, today, Fri I have not added any ice, just running off the ice from yesterday, I found house ice cubes near the bottom.
Excellent product HydroFlask!!! Keep up the outstanding work.
I own about a dozen HydroFlask's of various sizes, no complaints yet.
