Because I wanted to have the ability to power this little boat I also ordered the Intex motor mount, which does fit perfectly . The boat only took 10 minutes to set up with the provided pump ( had set it up at home first to be sure of no leaks) . Added a piece of plywood with pipe insulation on the edges for a more solid floor . As set up , it worked flawlessly . Spent a few hours on the water fishing with it and had zero problems. I like that I can toss it and my boat motor in my small car with my fishing gear and head to any body of water without towing a trailer or needing an actual boat launch .
For someone looking at purchasing this , I would have to say that adding the plywood floor is a good and cheap addition . The motor mount from Intex fits and does a good job . But I would not go bigger than a 3 hp two stroke for a gas engine . I am running a 2 hp and it goes along well without trying to bend the back of the boat down to much . Great boat for one person or possibly two if you don't have to much gear .
If this one ever gives up the ghost I will buy another . Would recommend it to anyone wanting a quick and easy boat that is easy to transport as well as set up / take down . Perfect for apartment dwellers or those not having space for a full time boat .
In short, we were the envy of almost every swimmer, kayaker, and SUP paddleboarder around. We had the speed, stability, cargo capacity, and comfort they just couldn't match. We could take off from the beach, row to the next town a couple miles away, go ashore for lunch, then repeat in the other direction. It completely changed the beach experience.
It can be partially deflated in a couple minutes to shove into the trunk of a car, or fully deflated and packed in about 10 minutes (by one person). The end result fits into a medium-sized (30L?) Rubbermaid bin. The only minor drawbacks are that the oars can touch the middle while rowing, so you have to be careful not to pinch a hand. Also, the boat doesn't track as straight as a kayak (no keel/rudder), so in anything but calm seas, you'll be making a lot of course correction inputs. It can get tiring in heavier seas. On the flipside, you can turn a 360 in about 3 seconds, which is very handy for keeping the boat properly oriented in the surf.
NOTE: Be sure to test yours on dry land before taking it out -- our first one had a substantial leak, but it was quickly returned to Amazon. The replacement has been perfect. If the price ever drops to sub-$100 again, we're in for a second one.
I guess the only thing to be careful of is the sun... UV will destroy this material quickly. And don't use it as a life raft... the seams and welds are the critical points, and this type of material/construction is just not suited as a liferaft, where your life literally depends on it. So when I'm not using the boat I store it out of the sun.
The oar locks are a little funky as some have noted. I can see those little plastic nuts stripping or breaking at some point, although I haven't noticed any wear. I had to experiment a bit to find a comfortable rowing position, and it's a little more forward than what I'm used to. Not awful, but it is a bit front-heavy with just one person. But overall I like it, and I really like how light it is, so I can easily toss it on my boat's roof for stowage.
Thickness and quality/construction of vinyl material.
Light grey with dark grey accents and overall design looks sharp.
Inflated in about 10 minutes using the foot pump.
Stayed inflated and rock hard for 3 days with no loss of pressure, despite huge temperature fluctuations from day to night.
Seats are well designed and especially useful for rowing
Intel motor mount fit perfectly.
Floor was firmer than expected.
Cons (not really):
3 chambers are great, but an inside outside chamber would be safer than right and left chambers
Size: Really a 2 adult boat, or 2 adults with an additional child if not fishing. But smaller size means lighter boat for transporting etc.
Oars: Oar locks worked well, paddled easily, oars are a bit flimsy but not for price.
Before this boat I owned the Intex 5, also an excellent raft/value but the Intex felt like more of a toy inflatable. The quality and thickness of the vinyl is so much better on the HydroForce. If you need or really want a bigger boat I definitely recommend the Intex 5. It is wider/longer and easily fits an additional 1-2 people.
I got so many questions/complements while fishing with my daughter.
