-works if the products lasts
-The blue coating on the valve adapter develops bumpy air pockets through time which leads to ghost flushing. For me it happened twice inside half a year.
Ensure sure the seal is secure with plumbers putty for a tight fit. If it happens again, clean/dry the adapter (if it is still in good condition), clean the valve seat throroughly and apply fresh putty when installing.
Got sick of the repetitive work around. I just went with the updated Fluidmaster duo flush valve kit and replaced the valve seat with a flat Fluidmaster version. So far, so good.
My tank lever is on a curved side resulting in insufficient clearance for the push button cartridge. The cartridge interferes with the float. I had to rotate it into a slanted position to avoid interference (see red arrow). Be warned and be prepared to make adjustments if your tank has a non-square shape.
Do yourself a favor and watch a YouTube video review by Phil. He lays out the procedure much clearer than the instructions. Also avoid wasting time and get yourself a new hose going from the wall to the tank. The O-ring on mine had hardened causing a leak and, stopping the installation mid-way.
It's important to understand how the green valve on top works to reduce water waste when filling the bowl (see arrow). In normal toilets you can waste more than a gallon down the fill tube. Think of the green nub as a flow indicator arrow. If it points along the fill tube, max water flows out. If it points up water is cut off. Water for the bowl flows only while the main tank is being filled so if this adjustment is made using the big flush the level will be too low for the small flush. Using the small flush adjust so the bowl is correctly filled by the time the main tank is filled. Adjustment is quick and easy once you understand the principle.
When seating the blue silicone dome gasket that seals the tank, think of how the old flapper works. The flapper seals only with its weight so pushing hard on the silicone seal will distort it and cause a leak. The black rubber ring is for holding everything in the correct position so don't force it down either.
As pointed out in other reviews, the zip tie is weak and will break leading to leaks. I have a Costco box of zip ties and chose the strongest that will fit through the slots. I also added another one on top for good measure.
Play with the small flush blue float adjustments to familiarize yourself before installing it. The clicks are numbered by steps, 2 clicks per step. I started at 3 steps from the bottom (bottom is max water). Adjust upward if you want to reduce the small flush amount. I did not do much with the green slide big flush adjustment, just pulled it a little bit up from the max bottom.
Installation and adjustment should not take more than 1/2 hour but add 1 hour for screwing up, more if you have to go buy stuff. Love the result.
I lifted the lids on three of the toilets that I installed these on about a year ago, and two of three had missing zip-ties that must have disintegrated and been flushed down the tank? The third one broke in my hands as I was inspecting it. I replaced them with stronger zip ties which may not have been the best alternative, as they seem to be torquing one side of the plastic clamp that it is affixed to. It's a cheap fix for now, I hope. How long the flushing phantom is kept at bay will remain to be seen.
UPDATE: The zip tie repair did not fix the random leaking and filling of the tank and I reseated the flush valve when i redid the zip tie. 24 hours later still no reply from Danco so I ordered the smarter flush kit and that will be my last experiment with dual flush conversions.
Top international reviews
The idea for this duo flush repair kit having both a fill and flush valve with a button is awesome. I was recommended this product by a friend who identified how it saves water and offers the great button feature.
I haven’t had this product for long. I can’t comment on whether it’s saved water, but I know it’s had more ghost flushes than I’ve ever used my toilet in the last year.
Less than a month old (and installed) the flush valve has started leaking about a week ago. The fill valve works fine. The Danco flush valve essentially drips via the rubber grommet that connects to the toilet tank flush valve. This results in a dripping of water. After about 20-60 minutes the fill valve kicks on to refill the tank. Many reviewers online have commented on this as “ghost flushing”.
I thought the problem was that the toilet, a standard American, had a broken tank flush valve. I’ve replaced the tank flush valve with a universal flush valve now and the Danco grommet still drips/leaks. I tried using some plumbers tape but after two days it’s dripping again.
The purpose of this assembly is to upgrade a toilet. It’s an upgrade, but it’s not permanent as it doesn’t seem to last. Many reviewers - especially on the Danco site - note that the product fails within 2-years of purchase.
I’ll call Danco customer support tomorrow. The person who recommended this product to me has also experienced the same problem, they are waiting for a replacement.
This unit seem to be fine, and I installed it over a year ago. Over that time, the toilet would not refill occasionally after a flush and you need to press the flusher again to get the toilet to fill up.
Recently the valve devolved an issue and you can hear water dripping inside the unit, after trying to adjust the unit, I discovered the fill hose developed holes, which isn't that much of an issue, until you test flush the toilet with the cover off, and get sprayed!
The unit now, just wont stop filling the toliet and have to manually shut off the water.
Overall it just lasted long enough for the 1 year warranty to expire. Would not buy again.
Finally some random piece broke off the flusher button, while trying to fix the value. Surprised it lasted this long.
Comparing this model HYR460 to the HYR451T I found:
Both installed pretty easy, fit our toilets well and seem to be well designed.
Both are vastly less expensive than replacing the toilet and both save water.
1) HYR451T was better for toilets with large toilet seat covers because HYR460 button became partially behind the cover making it awkward to flush. This was only an issue on some of our toilets.
2) The button on HYR460 seemed a bit sturdier than HYR451T.
3) With HYR451T I find I don't have to think about how long I am holding the handle down.
4) With HYR460 I find that I have to consciously make myself hold the button longer in order to get the flush (whether large or small flush).
2019 update. The product is still performing flawlessly. Our town well water is fairly hard but we choose to not use a water softener. The valve still looks like new and still works as well as the day we installed it. The original flapper is still 100 percent watertight. Great product!
The only thing the instructions don't mention is if you have an insulated tank.
Then the product fits a little more snugly and room is in issue.
My tank was insulated and I had to use a utility knife to 'peel' back some of the insulation but in the end works great as I said.
I have another toilet with a curved tank and this product would not work there. Too little space.
