Awful substitute for Hydroton (expanded clay)

This is sold as an expanded clay pebble substitute. It most certainly is not. This stuff will turn anything it touches brown. It doesn’t seem to matter how many times you wash it rinse it, repeat, you just can’t get it from staining everything it touches. I have noticed that my plants do not do as well using this medium either. I have this literally on an auto siphon which floods and drains my grow bed every three minutes. Even after doing seven water changes for seven weeks in a row, I am still getting the nasty brown color.

I like the croutons. Easy to use, great airflow. Seem very clean out of the bag and I'm relieved of a worry since there's no salt issues.
That said, I think I might have chosen them for the name. Grow lettuce in some croutons? OK! LOL.

These were just what I needed. It doesn’t look like a huge bag but they go a long way. I potted 89 four inch pots and topped each seedling with the coco croutons and still have half a bag left. The plants love them and they dress the little seedling pots up. They don’t rinse away. We have had tons of rain and none of the croutons from the top of the pots are missing. These were recommended to me by another grower and I am glad I took her advice. Would buy again.

What I have been looking for./ Price hikers

I grow indoors in a hydroponic garden. For years I have used the clay pellets. After using these I think iam going to switch, these are much lighter making shipping an option that the clay balls did not give. The Plants seem to grow the same in either medium. I like the idea of using something that would normaly be headed for the landfill as opposed to having something produced.

Update: 1 year later and the price is $5.00 more per bag. Why?

Not a suitable replacement for clay pellets...

Before putting these into my aquaponics system, I decided to test them out in a glass jar. What I found is that they turn the water an orangish-brown and unlike clay pellets (which will usually sink after soaking for a while) haven't floated down and are useless to my system. I'm unsure whether they would work mixed with clay pellets or if they'll eventually sink to the bottom but I wouldn't recommend this as a replacement for clay pellets or for an aquaponics system in general.
