I recently took a sourdough bread making class and as part of that class we were taught how to make your own starter and the need to feed and keep it alive for as long as possible or as long as you want. One of the key elements in keeping the starter alive is a good source of fairly constant heat. If you live in a region that experiences cold and you keep your heat set to a max of 70 degrees during the day and lower at night, then the starter is going to have a severe problem. Enter this mat. It's perfect for keeping your starter on and thriving. I will say that the Hydrofarm Digital Thermostat is a must have as well. Otherwise the mat will heat to max temp and result in "cooking" your starter. This thing is really great and does a terrific job, especially in conjunction with the added thermostat.

GREAT FOR KOMBUCHA MAKING TOO

Love it! Most people probably use this for seedlings -- I have no need for that anymore.
But it's the PERFECT temp for fermenting my Kombucha that I make at home in Glass jars.
It's about 10 degrees above room temp -- and the yeasties love that.
The results is Kombucha that ferments fully within 6 - 7 days without being bitter from overfermentation & production of too much acid.

Highly recommended.

Insulate under the mat!

We are home gardeners and have tried many ways to provide bottom-heat for vegetable seed germination -- atop my always-on docked laptop was the most effective but the space was tiny. We bought a 20" x 20" heat mat and now have the right tool for the job. We set it up on a card table and found that it was not providing sufficient heat to the soil in the trays above. After an overnight on the mat, the soil surface was less than 10 degrees above ambient temperature. The room where the seeds are was 60 degrees overnight, and the soil surface in the trays was 68 degrees -- certainly not good enough for eggplant germination. I used an infrared thermometer (Raytek Minitemp MT6 here on Amazon) to check all temps. The exposed mat surface (no tray on top) was 82 degrees. I felt the surface on the underside of the card able and it was definitely warm, indicating heat loss downward. I wanted all of the heat to go up into the soil, so I cut a piece of rigid-foam insulation just slightly larger than the heat mat (22" x 22") and put it under the mat. Within 15 minutes the exposed surface of the mat was at 97 degrees and when I moved a tray to measure the temp of the mat beneath a tray, it was at 115 degrees. 2 hours later, the soil surface temperature was at 85 degrees. I am now confident the soil will get enough heat for proper germination, and I will begin using the heat mat thermostat to regulate soil temps based on the particular seeds we're starting (search the Web for "vegetable seed germination temperatures" to find one of the many reference charts available). We can also regulate temperature by covering or uncovering the trays to change the rate of evaporative cooling. We are well aware that covered soil is more prone to damping off/seedling death, which we now control with a spray of strong-brewed chamomile tea.

Homebrewing is an alternative use for this

I actually bought this to use with a temperature controller for home brewing. Wrapping this around my fermenter, inserting a temperature probe into the fermenter, and connecting this to the temperature controller, I was able to keep a 5-gallon batch of beer in a plastic fermenter at the ideal fermentation temperature in my basement. If your environment was particularly cold (say 60 degrees F or less) this might not have enough wattage to keep your beer warm but it worked fine in a 63-65 degree basement to keep my beer in the 68-70 degree range necessary for the brew I made.

I emailed their customer service and after a week and a half they have not responded to my email. Not the right tool for the job.

I used this in combination with the Jump Start MTPRTC.

It mentions reptiles in the title, but I can't say I'd recommend it for that purpose. As it doesn't adhere to the bottom of the terrarium/bin/cage/whatever, consequently the heat transfer is a little on the inefficient side. It gets mildly warm, but it's in no hurry to do so. The heating is also not very even.

If you're looking for a herp heat mat, this ain't it. I've had a much easier time keeping temps where they should be with the Zoo Med UTH. The Hydrofarm mat is better built than the Zoo Med, but for keeping reptiles at the right temps, you're probably better off with something else.

If you're trying to keep seedlings from freezing, I don't see why this wouldn't work. I would still use a thermostat, just in case. Nobody wants to release the blue smoke monster if they can help it.
