This block actually worked really well. We saw the humidity level in the cabinet immediately start dropping. After a few days it was down to a good level, which was awesome. So, needless to say, this works really well if you need to get control of some humidity. I don't know how this would work in a larger space, but it definitely works well in our little storage area (we tried it just in the area as well which is about 5 by 10). This is a good buy and seems to work well.
I suspected that the indicator card changes color while there's still significant capacity, so, to avoid wasting energy (and to justify buying an electronic scale!), I weigh the bag. The 900 gram package readily adsorbs over 200 grams of water, closer to 300 grams when the air is cold and damp, so I'll consider recharging above 150 to 180 grams of adsorbed water.
The one negative for me is that the fabric bag develops a light toasty "tan" after a few trips to the oven. This makes me nervous about the bag getting brittle and tearing. Next time, I'll consider getting a perforated metal can or experimenting with alternate recharge methods.
I bought 2 of these to prop in the bedroom window that seemed to get incredibly moist which eventually lead to mold issues. With two of these boxes in the window the moisture as significantly decreased - mind you, I have these in an open bedroom that is around 14'x 20' - much bigger than the recommended space for these boxes. I throw these in the oven about every 2 weeks and they continue to work just as described.
They are a simple cloth bag in a cardboard box, but since they do what they are supposed to, can be reused, and are the best value for the size, I would buy these again and again (but I don't have to, they are reusable ; ) )
This seems to last me about two to three months between dry cycles. 4 months put it way past due. All three circles on the bottom turned pink. I would say 2 months used in this manner is reasonable. We'll see how it does coming into the humid season. I will still be satisfied with a once per month refresh in the oven.
I liked paying for the product, not a fancy package. There are others which plug into the wall to dry. I'm perfectly happy throwing this in the oven for a few hours.
I'm not sure where the 66 cubic foot rating comes from. I abuse it in an environment prone to condensation, and I get two months. I've got to believe it would last a very long time between refresh cycles when used in a safe.
The box have a color sensor at the bottom to indicate remaining capacity in the silica gel, when it goes all pink, pull it out and oven bake the gel pack for a couple of hours to remove all moisture, this process will reset the pack so you can continue using it.
I find the cardboard-box to be a bit fiddly when taking the bag out for drying, but then this is not exactly super expensive stuff, so Its not worth complaining about.
