With the extra ethernet adapter, I can now be on our two networks (my private lab net AND the teacher net) at the same time.
I put all of the options through their paces and everything works as they should. The brushed metal construction matches the iMac and looks like it belongs with it.
The main issue I've encountered is that the mini DisplayPort port on the hub fails to provide a stable connection to my monitor (ASUS PG279Q) when using a mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable. The picture on the monitor is extremely glitchy and low resolution, even after taking various troubleshooting steps. Despite following the manufacturer's recommended troubleshooting procedures, I was unable to resolve the issue.
What's particularly frustrating is that the item description specifically mentions support for Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort connections, which led me to believe that this feature would work seamlessly. Instead, I've been left with a hub that can't even deliver on its most basic advertised functionality.
But really, the most frustrating part is that I’ve tried contacting Hyper Support multiple times, but their responses have been unhelpful and lack any meaningful troubleshooting suggestions. One of the suggested solutions was to use direct video interface connections (e.g., HDMI-to-HDMI) instead of trying to connect via mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort, which I found irrelevant and unhelpful since this is exactly what I'm trying to do.
Another suggestion was to check for critical updates from my computer manufacturer, which didn't seem related to the issue at hand. The support team also recommended I “just use the VGA or HDMI port” on the hub, instead of mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort….. this is NOT a solution as it would require me to switch to lower-quality connections. It’s like wearing a pair of glasses, and the rep tells you to ignore the fact that one lens of your glasses is broken, and just use the eye with the intact lens to see….
Also, its noted that HyperDrive used an automated reply to their support requests on Amazon, as to not be flagged for non-response by the Amazon team…even though their initial reply is just an automated one.
As an IT professional, I'm particularly disappointed in the lack of technical expertise displayed by the support team. It's clear that they're not familiar with display connection protocols or the specific requirements of Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort connections.
Overall, my experience with the HyperDrive USB-C hub has been a disappointment, particularly with customer service. I would not recommend this product to anyone who values reliability and high-quality performance. Hopefully, future updates will address these issues and improve the overall user experience.
