Installed the second set last night and discovered a problem. When dimming the lights the two sets of bulbs dim at different rates. In the attached picture I have both circuits set at 10%. The bulb on the left is from the new set and the one on the right is from the earlier. The difference gets less as you increase the power but you have to get up to 65% before you don't notice, a setting so high it kind of defeats the purpose of dimming the lights.
I need to decide what to do. I use the Insteon system through my Echo so giving a voice command to dim the lights to 10% and to have this as the result is not acceptable.
In the long term, it also raises issues of what will happen in the future when I have to replace a single bulb? LEDs last a long time but they eventually do need to be replaced. What am I supposed to do at that point? Buy 4 bulbs and figure out other uses for the 3 old ones? So now I have 4 18W versions, along with the 8 9W Hiperikon bulbs involved in this review.
Biggest problem is I threw out the packaging for the 8 bulbs I got earlier so I can only return the last set.
[UPDATE 11/6] Was contacted by Hyperikon after posting this review. There was a change to the bulbs. Personally, I believe they should have created a new stock number and sell it as a "new and improved" product but that's not my call.
Person I spoke with on the phone said they would send me another set of 4 to get right, so well go from 1 star to 3 for now and wait to see what happens.
FWIW, getting a prompt response and having a solution in progress is what got me to order these - Hyperikon® 2.0 MR16 GU10, LED 7-Watt (50-Watt Replacement), 3000K (Soft White Glow®), 120 Volt, Dimmable Spotlight Bulb
Interestingly, the person I spoke to said I should just keep the 4 bulbs that were being replaced, however, I got an email from Maleeka at Hyperikon yesterday basically saying they were sending me 4 new bulbs, along with a prepaid return label with tracking ID to return the unused ones. I have no problems returning the bulbs but they need to work in the inter-office communication :)
[UPDATE 11/13] Got the replacement set yesterday. Interestingly, they sent me 8 bulbs, not just 4. I've replaced the 4 older ones and everything is working they way I expect it to. Since I didn't need to, I left the other 4 pack unopened and will be returning them along with the bulbs being replaced.
I've attached a picture of the new v.s. old type bulbs. What I find interesting is the new bulbs are closer to the shape of a incandescent bulb. I had to return the MR16 GU10 bulbs because they are quite a bit bigger than the halogens and wouldn't fit in my fixtures. Maybe the next versions of those will be smaller. Hopefully Hyperikon has learned and if they make a change to a product they call out that it is something new replacing a previous version.
UPDATE 2/23/2017: They're still working great! I put a GE smart dimmer switch and I'm impressed with their dimming capability. We've received a lot of compliments on our kitchen lighting because of the showroom-quality bright white light. These bulbs are pretty white so consider getting a dimmer switch. We usually have them around 80% brightness. Maybe flourescent light isn't the best way to compare this lighting to. Modern bright white is the best way I can explain it. You wont be disappointed with these unless you're looking for warmer light. It may take some time to get used to this lighting so give it a week or two before you decide to go with something else. At first, it seemed weird after having warm 3000K bulbs in the kitchen, but now we wouldn't have it any other way!
UPDATE: the company, Hyperikon, contacted me and wanted a 2nd chance, sending me 4 new bulbs to try. I got the bulbs, one was DOA out of the box, the other three worked and have worked for about 4 months now. They sent me one to replace the DOA and it is also still working. Changed my rating from 1 to 3 as they are very proactive and email me alot to make sure the bulbs are working.
