Before I get into the specifics, please understand that our minds (or at least mine) expect and associate a certain color when dealing with fluorescent lights. Specifically, 5k. Even 4k is a stretch. So the first time I installed one of the other colors, my mind was struggling to understand and accept what it was seeing. The point is, just because it is different doesn't (necessarily) mean it's bad. More about that below...
The attached (admittedly awful) image below shows them in decreasing color from left to right (i.e., the 6k is on the left, then the 5k, 4k, and finally the 3k).
The 3k color is almost orange. I am personally hard-pressed to come up with any good use for this color, and returned all of them. It felt like sundown on a fall day and left me feeling gloomy.
The 4k color is effectively a slightly less-bright version of the 5k. I used this in our office/art room and it provides a nice soft light with a nice balance between the white and orange colors. This is a good "typical application" choice.
The 5k color, as previously mentioned, is what is typically associated with fluorescent lights. It is quite white and clean without bleaching things out. I would say that this 5k LED is slightly brighter/whiter than an equivalent fluorescent. I used this color in our closet, laundry room, and garage. If you're looking to do a simple replacement and maintain the same effective color as your existing fluorescent lights, go with this.
The 6k light is EXTREMELY white. Operating room / dentist office white. I initially tried this in our laundry room, but even that application wasn't up to the power of these bulbs. Things almost have a blueish hue about them the light is so white/bright. I really wanted to like them for use in my garage, but the color is just overwhelming, even in such an open space. I gave it a several-day trial, but ultimately I couldn't grow to like it and the 5k was just a better choice.
Having said all of that, these are a simple and economical way to convert existing fixtures to LED without having to replace the entire fixture.
Unfortunately, my ballasts were not compatible so I did have to perform the bypass. However, it is a trivial procedure that after completing the first one to learn what I needed to do, I was able to complete each remaining bypass in less than five minutes apiece.
Anyway I noticed the cost of they Hyperikon were reasonable so I went ahead and bought 4 of the 5000k clear tubes and 4 of the 4000k frosted tubes to try out in my house. It was really easy to bypass the ballast on both the single ballast double ballast fixtures I have. On the single ballast fixtures one side had blue and red wires and the other side had yellow wires. I connected the black wire to the red/blue wires and the white wire to the yellow. Followed the same pattern on the dual ballast fixtures... black to red/blue and white to yellow. My understanding is you can go either way but it worked for me on the first fixture so why change?
Now the important part, the light was fantastic, IMO superior to the fluorescent. I originally bought both the 4000K and 5000K to try out around home to see which I preferred before moving on and redoing my office building. I don't think one could go wrong with either in an office setting but I really liked the 5000K.
Next step was to order a 10 pack and try it out in my office (has 2 - 4 tube fixtures) in a 15'X15' space. It is bright, but not harsh at all, very nice light to work all day under. I won't go back to fluorescent again. My employees liked them as well so I'm going to redo the whole office... 160 tubes total of which I've ordered 90 of so far.
I've installed 98 tubes so far, not a bad one in the lot. I've also gotten very quick on the changeover, approx 10 min for a one ballast fixture and 20 min for a 2 ballast fixture. Time to order more.
I've uploaded a picture of all the old tubes replaced (164) and a picture of one of the offices with the replaced LEDs. Been using them for 4 weeks or so and can't say enough about how much I like them. Not one bad replacement light in the lot.
Now that it is done I would definitely recommend bypassing the ballast whether you need to or not. Not a difficult job plenty of youtube resources on how to do it. I would also recommend using the Wago wire connectors, I used mostly the 6 wire and 4 wire varieties but occasionally used the 2 wire ones when I had to splice a wire to make it longer, much better than the twist wire connectors.
It also should be noted I bought all the tubes at full retail on Amazon, I was not one of the lucky ones to get a discounted product to review.
We did have to contact the manufacturer as one bulb did not work, and they were incredibly prompt with a reply and extremely helpful in replacing the bad bulb. The replacement bulb they sent had the correct instructions and wiring diagram. I am posting a picture in case it might help others who ran into the same installation issues we had.
