Fortunately, there's a GREAT alternative. New Trent makes an outstanding 10,000 mah battery that you can buy from Amazon. This company OEMs batteries for Apple themselves and the battery packs are high-end lithium polymer powerhouses that feel like an Apple product. Yes, they are that well designed. I bought one and I couldnt be happier. It charges my iPad 2 and iPad 3 (aka new iPad), Blackberry, and iPods no sweat and it can charge multiple devices at once. For iPads, it can provide the needed 2amps.
I've owned many New Trent batteries and love them, but you don't need to bother shopping around for the right one. This, the IMP100P is the right model. It runs $69.95 but trust me, it's worth it.
I hope this saves someone from buying the wrong battery pack for an iPad. And to be clear, if you only need to power smaller, less demanding items, then the specs on this battery appear sufficient.
This claim is wrong.
Based on the specs for this external battery, it can only supply 500 mA of 5V power (ie 2.5 W). The iPad 3 needs more than that to run (eg 4.6 W when surfing the internet) and if you plug this external battery into the iPad, you'll get the dreaded 'not charging' indicator. It might extend the time it takes for the iPad battery to run to zero, but it isn't a convenient way to quickly top up the iPad's internal battery at all. Indeed, with the iPad 3 turned off, it would take 17 hours (more or less - ie potentially more and definitely none less) to transfer its charge to the iPad 3, assuming that the iPad would accept a 'trickle charge' recharge. Allowing for some inefficiencies in the power transfer, this unit holds about enough power to recharge the iPad 3 battery once.
By comparison, Apple's own charger is 10W (ie four times greater than this is rated for).
For other uses, however, this would be great, and its 10,000 mAh capacity is marvelous, and its price is fair. But don't go expecting it to conveniently recharge your iPad's battery.
