My only issue is just this: The color balancing is a little off on mine. The blue is a little too strong and the red a little too weak.
Why 4 stars then you ask? Because it is affordable, has a razor sharp picture, and I haven’t noticed a hint of input lag.
Tips:
If you go with a cheap ac adapter for your Genesis you are probably going to get some serious interference. Getting a better power supply resolved that for me.
Using this on HDMI TV worked great. As this is what it is intended for. I also tried it on a monitor using a DVI port adapter. It would not display. I used an avermedia live gamer portable hdmi passthrough port and it worked. It has been the only way to get it to work over DVI. Since no one ever said it would work over DVI I have NOT lowered my score to reflect this.
Now, be VERY aware that the adapter cable that they supply you with to connect to a Model 1 Genesis/Mega Drive is NOT the correct one. It does not fit properly. The connector pins are larger than what they ought to be to connect to a Model 1. You can try and wedge it in there but it's not advisable to do so. You risk damaging the AV port of your console. See the photo I have attached of that. The Hyperkin connector is on the left of the pic. The correct, official Sega connector is on the right.
Following on from the above, that adapter cable will though fit perfectly on a NEO GEO AES system. See the photo. Unfortunately though, the quality of the image on a Neo Geo is poor. The visuals are dark, and while you can adjust the brightness on your TV to try and compensate for that, the crispness and correct color reproduction is just not there.

So I have officially given up on this. It is really too bad because when it worked the image looked great. But I decided to replace this device with HD Retrovision cables, my past experience with HD Retrovision tells me that it will last much longer than a year. I had high hopes for Hyperkin, but taking into account that they supplied the wrong Model 1 connector and after a little more than a year the device does not work, I have to drop my score to 1 star.
Update: Dec 10th, 2020
It is disappointed to think that my 30+ year old Genesis still works and a device that is a little over a year old does not.
After finally obtaining the proper Model 1 converter cable, the connection to the Genesis now is correct and looks great......when the device works.
Sadly, after about a year of light use, the device no longer consistently works. While playing a game, the image to the TV will intermittently go black for extended periods of time. If I wait it out, the image will come back. Then it cycles between working and not working. It is hard to play a game when the screen goes black every few minutes. I verified that it was not my Genesis with my original A/V cables and it works fine, so I know it is the Hyperkin HDTV Cable and not the Genesis.
When it works the image looks great. Too bad it is malfunctioning just over a year after purchasing.
I will buy another similar product because the picture looked great and it was easy to use. But I am very disappointed that it stopped functioning properly and because of the Model 1 converter issue I have to drop the rating. For the price and if it works and if I did not have to source the proper converter cable, I would give it 5 stars, but under the circumstances, It is between a 1 and 2 stars. :-(
Original review:
A 5 Star Product! Why only 3? (now only 2 star)
My initial impression are very good. Compared to the original AV cable, this cable's image is vastly superior!
Text on screen is clear, the colors are bright, every game I have tried looks much, much better and the sound comes through great.
In my opinion, for the price point, this is a significant upgrade from standard AV cables. It is well worth the money if you are looking for a convenient way to hook the Genesis up to a modern TV.
There are two issues I have noticed. One small, and one bigger.
1) This product is designed to connect to Genesis. If you have an attachment, such as the SEGA CD, any sound originating from the SEGA CD will not pass through to the HDMI cable from the SEGA CD to the Genesis. Hook up external speakers to the SEGA CD.
2) My second, and much BIGGER issue is with the included converter attachment for the model 1. It appears that the converter cable included is the NEO-GEO cable. They look very similar but they are not compatible. So the connector is useless for the Genesis.
As I do not have a model 2 or 3 Genesis, I cannot comment on the connection for those consoles. And as this is my initial impressions, I have no idea about durability. (It ended up being very bad)
After reading a few other reviews, it seems like I am not the only one who is experiencing this Model 1 extension cable problem. Yet despite the Model 1 attachment issue, I would still recommend this to anyone with a SEGA Genesis who wants to connect it to a modern TV. But at least in my case, be warned you may need to source your own Model 1 converter cable. But Considering this is the critical point of connection, I hope the company provides the proper cable in the future.

I bought this in preparation for buying a new TV, so I was able to compare both the old composite signal and the HDMI signal back to back. And honestly it does a pretty good job.
Pros:
- No noticeable lag. Playing games like Sonic 2 felt crisp and smooth. I never felt like there was any delay between my button presses and the game responding.
- Crisp picture. The Hyperkin definitely looks way sharper than my composite cables do. Much easier to see what's going on.
- Sound works perfectly.
Cons:
- The brights are a bit washed out. For example, if you play Sonic 2 you'll notice clouds in the background are missing some of their details. This is generally fine, but occasionally a bit noticeable.
- The blacks are a bit crushed. Playing Alien 3 I noticed some of the background details were showing up as pure black. It was also noticeable in some parts of The Adventures of Batman and Robin where things like the Batmobile lost enough detail for it to be noticeable. Mostly not a big issue, but could hurt some darker games.
Overall:
If phrases like "crushed blacks" and "blown out whites" don't mean anything to you, then this is the perfect device for you. You'll love it. If those phrases make your skin crawl, then you should be buying a RetroTink, an OSSC, or a Rad2X.
The main options for a modern Mega Drive connection are an OSSC, a Retrotink, or a RAD2X cable. An OSSC will set you back over £100, a Retrotink starts from around £80 for their budget model, and the RAD2X while a somewhat reasonable £55~ has been out of stock for some time. Being a cheapskate, I opted to just use the RF cable that comes with the console but it looks a blurry mess and isn't up to par on a modern screen. So when I found this £30 cable (with included gen1 adaptor!) I wasn't expecting much.
However as you can see from the picture its absolutely fine. Flawless? No, it's only 720p compared to the more expensive options, but considering a mega drive outputs at 240p its still a massive upgrade and a decently sharp picture. The colours look perfectly good too. It is missing out on stereo audio (the RAD2X etc have an aux input for stereo audio pass throw) however. 1080p and an aux passthrough would be nice to haves but you can work around it and for £30 you can't complain too much.
I'll see how it holds up to time but for now I very much recommend it.

Keep the settings on the cable switch to 4:3. 16:9 just stretches the image and makes the games look wrong. 4:3 was the aspect ratio these games were designed to be played in, so just get used to having black bars on your widescreen TV when playing them.
