Fc twin console and Genesis 2 which I also own. The Retron 3 eliminates the need to buy all three consoles.(Nes, Snes, & Genesis)
However, some purists may feel the need to buy all 3 of those consoles, simply because they want the original product. This can get pretty
pricey and the old consoles may or may not work at all. Keep in mind that the Retron 3 cannot play all the games for all 3 systems.
But it can play most of them and that's what matters most. Check Wikipedia for game compatibility. I've read some reviews of this console
complaints of some sound or picture flaws. I was playing my Super Mario All Stars- SMB 3, let me tell you something. Using just the AV
cable, the picture and sound are incredible! You actually have to turn the sound down a bit while playing any Snes game. The colors are
just as vibrant as the Snes or even better in my opinion.
Here are some things I found out about the Retron 3 console.
1. Be sure you clean your games throughly before playing them. If your games are dirty, they will not start, and you'll get a blank screen.
2.If the wireless remotes don't work well for you, use the original controllers or 3rd party controllers. I haven't tested the wireless remotes yet. Will give an update at a later time.
3. If you cleaned your games and they still don't work, try blowing on them. If they still don't work, the game is not compatible.
4. Some people complain that the game cartridges are hard to pull out. If your console is new, it just needs to be gently broken into.
Don't try to pull the game with force, be gentle.
When I set up my Retron 3 for the 1st time, it would only play Nes and Genesis games. I tried putting my Harvest Moon Snes in the slot
and would just get a blank screen. So I cleaned the contacts really throughly and eventually the game started up. If you have a Snes or
Nes Game genie, those work on the Retron 3. The Retron 3 will not tolerate dirty games, so be sure to clean them good!
One of the great things about this console is that you can use the original Nes, Snes, and Genesis controllers. There are 2 slots for each
system. The Snes is on the front, Nes on the left side, and Genesis on the right side. One other thing I want to mention is, you can leave
your Snes, Nes, and Genesis carts in their slot, make sure to switch to the proper console you're playing on.
There's a switch on the back of the console that allows you to play Japanese Super Famicom games, how cool is that?
If you're a Retro Gamer like myself, I'm sure you'll love the Retron 3. Just think of all the money you'll save if you buy one.
They don't cost very much, usually under $60 on Amazon. On E-bay, most of them are $59 and up. So far, the only problems I had were
games that wouldn't play due to be being dirty and needed cleaning. The fact that I can play most of the old Snes, Nes, and Genesis games of yesteryear. I would highly recommend buying a Retron 3 if you want to play the old Nes, Snes, and Genesis games, that will
save you a lot of money and space.
There are lots of people who say that the Retron 3 wireless controllers are garbage.
I haven't encountered any problems with the wireless controllers. It's true you have to sit
directly in front of the console, they're like a TV Remote. However, you don't have to be
very close to the console for the controllers to work. When playing games, I sit about 3 feet
away from the console with no problems. You do have to get used to the button layout. It didn't take me too long to learn where the buttons are for a certain console. These controllers work great on NES, Genesis, and SNES games. Those people who say negative things about the wireless controllers either have defective controllers, have defective Retron consoles, or don't have any idea on how to use them properly, it's that simple.
The game screen came on, and I hit Start. Over and over again. Having seen some crappy old school wireless, I got on level with the sensor and hit the Start button. Over and over again. I switched batteries. Twice. Coming to a fair conclusion, I grabbed the second controller. I started playing. It was fun...until I realized I couldn't jump. (Which is kind of critical in a game like Altered Beast, LOL) So I watched the infrared light on the console as I used both controllers and it confirmed what I already suspected. First had had a busted Start Button, second one had a busted C Button. Not a terribly big issue, I planned on getting Sega Genesis controllers anyways. I can't afford to eat the Triple A's (not included, BTW.)
I tried Kid Chameleon and had some shiggles playing it Mario style because the C Button is what allows you to use abilities so I just jumped on my enemies instead. xD Then I put in X-Men. Rather than seeing the standard Sega title, the words "This game is only for use with NTSC Official Sega Consoles" or something like that. This simply would not work. I refused to use a system that was hit and miss on the titles it could play. So I resigned myself to returning it, and this resignation grew evermore as I seen this was a common issue for Retron 3 owners. But then I came across a particularly useful review in which the user stated that by switching the J/O toggle on the back, he could play the games that weren't playing before. I unwrapped my system, hooked it up and threw in X-Men after toggling the switch. Sure enough, that old familiar Sega load screen popped up.
So here's a basic rundown of pluses and minuses for the system overall:
My system came attractively packaged and well packed to boot. However, when I removed all the components, the same thing struck me as I'm sure struck everyone else who has held one of these devices in their hands; this feels REALLY flimsy.
However, the streamlined components making the system both sleek and space-friendly (it is literally no bigger than a single SNES console itself) I found attractive.
The 'Instructions' are on the back of the box and no paper manual is included. The set of instructions tells you the contents of the package and how to hook it up. It then gives you some standard warnings like not inserting SNES carts backwards (which us Old Schoolers appreciate as that was a warning on the original SNES System as well), not switching between formats rapidly and not hooking both AV and S Vid up at the same time. And it comes with a not so standard warning; Don't play more than one cartridge at the same time. Yeah...count on me to try that one... And that's it. It didn't even mention the J/O toggle which I at first took to be the standard Channel 3/4 switch on the Old Schoolers. I would like to see more comprehensive instruction in the future.
The controllers being constantly defective as reported elsewhere is an issue which needs addressed badly. I ain't paying for half a system. However, as also pointed out elsewhere, the original controller ports make up for it somewhat. Wireless is a bad idea anyways, because it eats up batteries. But on principle; if I'm paying for something I don't want it jackled up when I receive it. Bad Business 101 right there. :/
Also mentioned has been the issue of needing to aim the controller darn near at the sensor to get it to work. I found this odd. When I realized which paddle would work best for screwing around with the Genesis games even with lack of C function, (ergo losing part of the gaming experience for now but having fun anyways because I haven't played these games in a LONG time, LOL) I had no issue with this. My console sat in the floor and my paddle in my hands, just above my lap on the couch on which I sat. Which was a few feet away from the console itself. The parts of the controller that DID work, worked fine at this range and height.
One reviewer mentioned how the ports were seated. It is somewhat awkward, I agree, because depending on the length of cable you need from device to seat, you may have to turn the console to access the ports and that should be fun with the AV jack setup the way it is. I had no issues with my Nintendo controllers (8-Bit) reaching, however. I still don't see this as a BIG deal, and unless they can fix it so all the ports sit on front of the device without hampering its streamlined looks and the game functionality, I'd just prefer it be kept as is. Longer AVs would be nice too, LOL
Overall, great concept, but the design and execution needs rounded out. From what I've seen so far, and if it plays well for me in the future, well worth the money.

I will say 9/10 only because of some minor controller issues, otherwise this is a great way to enjoy old games. (hyperkin also sells classic controllers)
