Deadly dull first half but the action and tension pick up in the last half of the book

Note: some spoilers in this review. The Hyperspace Trap, I unfortunately have to say, is not one of Christopher Nuttall's finest works. As a fan of the author's work, I felt somewhat disappointed in this story which felt laboured through the first half and only picked up in the last half of the book. Then too, it had the unfortunate distinction of reminding me of a well known disaster movie starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. It was hard not to miss the similarities: Supreme vs Titanic - ship names suggesting power and majesty; poor little rich girl who feels constrained by her lot in life and wonders how the other half live; family money gone vs wealthy family whose money is in danger of being lost and so the family makes a fine match for the daughter to another wealthy family in the hopes of reinvigorating the family's fortune and in both cases the groom to be is unpleasant; naturally there is no large, dangerous ice-bergs in space (unless you're counting comets) but there is the equivalent and equally dangerous hyperspace trap. Aside from all the similarities to the movie, Titanic, the Hyperspace Trap's last half was good. The author kept up the atmospheric tension in the last portion of the book - nobody wants to think they're hearing voices, seeing flickering images or going mad. For that piece of action, it was at least worth wading through the rather dull first half of the book.

Very Slow Beginning But Ends Up Being Fun

I like the idea fueling this novel. Variations of it have been used a lot of times (on Star Trek and Dr. Who, for example, not to mention C.J. Cherryh’s Port Eternity) but it works. A galactic cruise ship filled with important people is stranded with a strange alien creature in hyperspace and we have to see if they’re going to be able to escape. Unfortunately, I almost didn’t get to this novel’s hook because the first quarter of the novel was overstuffed with story-establishing world and character building and not enough actual story. In fact, it was not until chapter ten that the novel caught my attention and I started to become genuinely interested in one of the storylines. Over the next fifty pages or so I began to become fully engaged with the characters and by midway through the book when the promised plot finally opened the story improved dramatically and I was hooked. If I been the editor, I would have suggested starting with chapter ten. Most of the information in the first nine chapters could have been dropped completely without any harm at all to the overall storyline. In disaster books where lots of people are going to die, you want to establish enough characters that it matters when bad things start to happen to them, but in this case, the vast majority of those people didn’t matter to me—or at least they didn’t matter by chapter ten.

So that’s the bad, but there is a lot of good here too. Once the hyperspace trap is sprung, the novel leaps forward with ever increasing excitement. Every character becomes valuable and it’s not clear who, if anyone is going to survive. Madness starts to take over the ship fueled by religious fanatics who think the trap houses the gods Perversely, this is the place where the author begins racing his plot forward when I wished he would have slowed down to explore the situation more fully.

So my final recommendation is this—hurry though the first nine chapters. Skip the middle ones if you must. But get to chapter ten however you can and start reading. Because the rest of this book is a ship load of fun and the stage is set for a promising sequel if Nuttal wants to write it.

scary space adventure!

I understand that this book is related to a series by this author, but it is not necessary to have read them to understand the plot of this story. Luxury space cruise liner takes off, with a serial killer locked up in the brig, multitudes of arrogant and entitled passengers, nervous captain....what could possibly go wrong? Well, everything. Chased by pirates in hyperspace, our unlucky cruiser lands right in the middle of a hyperspace trap. Scary mayhem ensues!
I am disappointed in the author's juvenile inclusion of unnecessary sex scenes. Of course the woman had "long legs", a sad fantasy staple of sci fi male authors. Grow up boys! The use of profanity also sounded juvenile, and was actually rather awkwardly used. Leave it out for a better story. I deducted two stars for these two reasons.

I'm hearing the refrain from "There has to be a morning after". I'm also reminded of the first Zane Grey book I read. Insignificant boy meets elite girl. Falls in love with girl. Loses girl. Wins her back, etc. There's also jarring inconsistencies like bodies floating around that were supposed to be in space suits. Everyone is aboard a cruise ship filled with royalty, with staff that act like exaggerated popinjays. Oh, and don't forget the boogeymen that want to take over your mind and eat your soul. The ship doesn't turn over, but it gets lost in hyperspace, and as everything goes from bad to worse we get these little vignettes as some catastrophe has to be resolved. The whole story is too ridiculous to swallow, but if this is your kind of fiction, have at it.

Slow but intriguing buildup

The maiden voyage of a huge space cruise ship is interrupted when pirates force the captain too near to what appears to be a hyperspace storm. The storm turns out to be a trap set by energy-feeding aliens. The first half of the book has a slow pace, depicting life aboard the huge super-luxury liner - but the author manages to maintain a suspicious threat that "something" is about to happen. The last half is about the attempt to escape the energy-draining trap. What's more, unseen non-corporal aliens are driving passengers and crew to attack each other as this increases their energy levels. Situations inside the trap are reminiscent of Mario Bava's 1965 film "Planet of the Vampires". Very enjoyable reading.

I lost interest half way through this book. The characters were new and unrelated to the other books in this series and the fact that a passenger cruise ship is not the military was overstated with too much repetition. I just could not get any interest in their fate and it was a very predictable Titanic like story.

I really like this author’s work and trust that the next one will be back on track.

My star rating is not truly accurate. To be honest the story is poor until you get to about 40% in. There is this rich girl on a cruise with a big ruby necklace who falls for a lower class lad and then then they strike an iceberg.......no sorry that is Titanic. Remove the necklace and change the iceberg for a hyperspace storm and we're talking about The Hyperspace Trap.
Christopher Nuttal has a problem with his view of the reader - basically we are all a bit dim and can't follow the details of his plots. To this end we are repeatedly told key bits of information to ensure we understand. For example; Corporate are going to come down hard on its employees if they so much as blink whilst on duty. I think we were told this every 2-3 pages.
The characters didn't have time to develop fully. Most you simply don't care about. Some were better than others of course with the basic rule of thumb being the younger they are the more words attributed to them. I wondered, quite early on who the target audience was for this book and came to the conclusion it was young adults who thought that this was a grown up move from Harry Potter.
The second half of the book was a huge improvement - pirates, disasters, aliens, riots - all the good stuff. I definitely missed Kat Falcone and here approach to problems. This was NOT a book worthy of her series. Instead we had to put up with Paul a captain constrained by career protection and a lack of spirit.
The human baddies were clear, as were their story arcs, from the moment they were introduced. It wasn't a case of were they going to do X but when.
There were technically huge holes in the plot. For instance when power is lost to the whole ship, the gravity will go. The fact it didn't reinforces the Titanic analogy. Also, safety systems would definitely include isolating doors that were powered open and sealed shut in an emergency. All space warships and cruise liners have them.
The ending was a bit hurried and there is definitely a follow book that could be written.
To summarise, I really didn't like the beginning and first half but enjoyed the somewhat predictable but nevertheless engrossing second half.
It wasn't great but I would try a sequel.

For a science fiction fan this was a difficult read for the first forty per cent, in the sense that with little of much value occurring within the story line, turning the pages relied on the determination to carry on with the hope it would improve. Setting a dull and tedious interplay of family relationships aboard a starship and making occasional references to hyperspace does not make it science fiction. Up to this point, simply by changing some names and locations, the story could equally well have been a historical novel set aboard an ancient sailing vessel. However, having spent far too long describing characters, the story suddenly becomes interesting when events start occurring. Patience is rewarded and the slow opening can perhaps be forgiven. The pace picks up and the last quarter of the book is very entertaining indeed.

I'm an avid reader of Christopher Nuttall's work, especially his SF. I've read everything he's wrotten in the genre and was looking forward to this one, knowing it would be great. Unfortunately, I was dissapointed. I found the characters, at best, uninteresting, and at worst, plain annoying.....the first half of the book dragged along with basically nothing happening, and was, as a previous reviewer said, Titanic in space. It did pick up in the second half, but by that stage I was just reading in the hope that something might improve....it didn't. I won't bother with the next book in the series ( this has been set up for a sequel), and Chris, as they used to say at the end of school reports....'could do better'
