I was 34 weeks pregnant when I bought this. I didn't plan on a natural birth and I didn't read any hypno-birthing books or take a hypno-birthing class. I mostly bought this to help me relax at night so I could sleep better. I liked this CD enough, I also bought Gabrielle Targett's other set. I'd often find listening to one of the tracks was more restful--and easier to get up from--than a nap. It didn't cure all insomnia, but it did help.
When my labor started, I decided to labor at home as long as I could before going to the hospital. I was able to stay relaxed through contractions while listening to Gabrielle Targett. I had it in my mind that I was going to have a long labor (it was my first) so I was in no hurry to get to the hospital. When I finally got to the hospital about 6 hours after my contractions started, The nurse checked my cervix and I was already 9 cm dilated! I was surprised since even though my contractions were pretty intense, I was still able to breathe through them. I was still offered an epidural, but at that point I was more scared of the needle in my back than I was of the pain. Pushing was pretty intense, but all worth it for my baby. I didn't regret refusing the epidural. And even though it was painful, I was able to see the whole thing as a positive experience.
I believe these tracks helped me keep calm and stay positive throughout my labor. That, mixed with a shorter-than-expected labor, and the absence of any back labor, led to me not getting an epidural, even though I had planned on one.
I would recommend this CD even to women not trying for a natural labor. It was cheep, it helped me relax, and it was nice to have a pain management strategy beyond just drugs.
I listened to this every night for 2 months before I had my second child. I did home birth with both my kids and the first was a shockingly painful experience, so I thought this might help. I ended up being in labor for 7 hours with my second baby and listened to the one hour track on repeat for the first 5 hours. It certainly didn't take the pain away, but did end up helping me "get in the zone" and manage the contractions better. For those people like me who aren't going to dedicate fully to hypnobirthing, this could be a helpful alternative.
Great price. I haven't delivered yet but listening to this in the evenings before bed has helped me train myself for relaxation. I had a difficult first birth and this is already calming many anxieties. Unfortunately I don't think I've consciously listened to the whole duration yet as I keep falling asleep while listening, but I suspect that's a good thing!
In my sixth month. I much preferred this to "Hypnobirthing" audio based on Gabrielle Targett's voice- the suggestions are much more soothing and less bossy. Content wise there are a few errors ("We'll count down now from one to five...") but effective self-hypnosis technique and empowering message! Love it.
My wife is 35 weeks and we purchased this when she was around week 27. So far she has slept every night to it and it has really helped both her anxiety over child birth and my own. Such a relaxing cd and the Australian accent makes it much more relaxing.
