About the author

Michael A. Sherlock is an atheist author, or "New Atheist" author, although he rejects the label New Atheist as being nothing more than a derogatory nomenclature describing atheists who refuse to simply sit idly by and say nothing while religion wreaks havoc on our planet. His work has received the praise of Richard Dawkins and in one review he was called "the next Christopher Hitchens".
Sherlock, as he is often called, was born and raised in Sydney, Australia. He spent many years in Tasmania, where he studied social anthropology, sociology, political science and Law at the University of Tasmania.
Sherlock is currently studying a Master's Degree in Religion at the University of New England.
Sherlock's aim as an author is to expose the "sacred" lies, frauds and forgeries of religion. Sherlock says: "Before we can clear a path to finding truth, whatever that may be, we must first neutralize the filth which has infected the minds of so many...Supernaturalism, superstition, pseudo-science, and religion, all embody this mental filth, and the scientific method, with its humble, honest and evidence-based approach to questions of probable truth, represents the neutralizer."

- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2014In this book Michael Sherlock argues that beliefs have been used as a tool by the powerful to enslave humanity both mentally and emotionally. His ultimate goal is to describe an idea that will allow us to think in a way that is independent of belief systems and describes it as a "type of holistic thinking and being, or unified consciousness described by Jung as individuation." He uses the Christian belief system to illustrate the discrepancy between a system of beliefs and the truth that it claims to represent. As a result, he shows the Christian Gospels are laced with contradictions, plagiarisms, errors, and forgeries. It is his contention that if we do not learn to separate our subjective realm of perception and belief (perceived reality) from actual truth, we may eventually destroy ourselves.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2014All religions, and I mean all religions, are never backed up with any scientific data! I believe this or that is nonsense - Santa Claus, Tooth Fairy, and religions all fall in the same catagory of make believe! I loved this book! Simply said: Science, science, science, either learn truth and expand to a new level or we as a species will die on this planet! All the sciences tell us the same thing about our planet, either advance or go by way of the dinosaurs! If we die off - trust me - the universe won't care! Ought to make this book a must read in school, however, (In God We Trust) won't allow truth! Motto: Live by Truth, or Die by Superstition!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2014Great book with top notch research and solid references, the author does a great job in the first 2 chapters preparing the reader for a delightful journey. I'm looking forward to completing the trilogy.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2013According to the bio at the end of the book, ’Michael is deeply troubled by the infirmities of this world and will not rest until he has done everything in his power, to at least attempt, to remedy them.' One of those infirmities is "belief" and, in this book, Michael sets out to disabuse the world of this life and death threat.
There are lots of good points made in the book but the problem is that they are buried amongst overwrought hyperbole and highly emotive, sarcastic language (the author sees himself as ’sarcastic and slightly antagonisitic’). But “slightly” is an understatement. The entire first part of the book is highly emotive, full of hyperbole, and written in a style that undermines the intention (I assume) to present a rational, objective case against belief - particularly the beliefs of Christianity (especially fundamentalist Christianity). By the end of the wordy and repetitive first section I really felt irritated and had to resolve to persevere onto the next section. The title of the first section is ’Belief: Cognitive Constipation’ - the subtitle being an apt description of its contents despite making an essentially good point.
Parts 2 and 3 are a polemical attack on Christianity and the historicity of Jesus Christ. Once again, there is some good material in these sections but, once again, the style of writing is confrontational, sarcastic, antagonistic, and laborious.
One of the more serious criticisms I'd make of the book is its lack of fair-mindedness. While the author does, at times, summarise some of the arguments opposing his view, they are not presented in a way which communicates good faith and an unbiased perspective. The author clearly has a vested interest in the issue and, unfortunately, he does not take care to present his case in rational, objective language free of emotionality. This feature of the writing would undoubtedly alienate many readers, particularly fundamentalist Christians, who one assumes, if his intention to liberate people from the prison of belief is genuine, would be included in the intended audience.
The are a whole range of other problems with the book which I don't have the time or inclination to document (eg, caricatures of general Christian beliefs rather than recognising the diversity of perspectives; engaging in speculation similar to that the author criticises to mock certain fundamentalist doctrines; and so on).
The problem with all this is that, to glean what is good from the book, an enormous amount of critical thinking needs to be done unless, of course, a person is already persuaded of the perspective and just wants to laugh along at the sarcasm, mockery, and attempts at humour (some of it successful!) thrown at those the author thinks are liars or stupid. There is no genuine engagement with the best Christian scholarship on the subjects covered and quite a few “straw men” that are easily destroyed.
In my opinion, there are much better books on the topic which take a critical look at the claims Christians make about the Bible, Jesus Christ and their beliefs. This book could have been so much better if a good editor was to be involved. I look forward to a second edition if that process was ever engaged in.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2015A very well written book. It is clear & concise. I wish to congratulate the author, Michael Sherlock, for publishing such a great book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2013The author states it is wrong for religions like Christianity to force their beliefs on others, saying they are just beliefs. O.K. That is HIS belief, and by selling a book on Amazon he wants other people to think like him. He is a missionary for his own philosophy. According to him, it is wrong for Christians to push their beliefs, but somehow it is o.k. to write a book about your beliefs and publish it on Amazon. This is a self-defeating premise. Is it wrong for Christians to think they are right and encourage others to hold their philosophy but somehow all right for HIM to push his philosophy and beliefs. Tell me, are we in the old Twilight Zone TV show here? Did everyone skip logic 101?
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2013One of the most thought provoking books I have ever read. Sherlock is an amazing thinker and writer. Would suggest reading his work.

Stephanie D. NorrisReviewed in Canada on June 24, 20145.0 out of 5 stars The Next Christoper Hitchens!
If there is one book you need in your library beside your Bible and/or beside Christopher Hitchens books, this is it. No longer will you ask the question of why people believe. The answers are here. The historical, cultural and psychological perspectives in this book reveal the Bible's atrocities in all three, not to mention the errors in scientific thought. It also shows the reader how these errant beliefs still lay beneath much of the holocausts of today and will, without challenge, contribute to our demise as a species. Ignorance can be "cured" with education. Wilful ignorance is a type of insanity, a holding onto, with desperation, delusional thinking that has been the cause of and will be the cause of, more suffering for everyone. Ask first why other's believe what they do. Most importantly, ask WHY you believe what you do. Do not fear evidence. It isn't evidence that killed millions in concentration camps, that at this moment, is still strangling most of the populations in Africa. Evidence didn't create the Crusades, burned the great libraries of the world, executed intellectual honesty. This "honour" goes to BELIEF. PLEASE read this book (and the one's coming up). Don't just READ in either. Research it. You will be amazed. A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
