Editorial Reviews
2019 release. I Am Easy To Find is The National's eighth studio album and the follow-up to 2017's Grammy-award winning release Sleep Well Beast. A companion short film with the same name will also be released with music by The National and inspired by the album. Oscar nominated Mike Mills, along with the band, is credited as co-producer of the album, which was recorded at Long Pond, Hudson Valley, NY with vocal contributions from Sharon Van Etten, Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Lisa Hannigan, Mina Tindle and more. The two projects are, as Mills calls them, "Playfully hostile siblings that love to steal from each other" - they share music and words and DNA and impulses and a vision about what it means to be human in 2019, but don't necessarily need one another. The movie was composed like a piece of music; the music was assembled like a film, by a film director. The frontman and natural focal point was deliberately and dramatically side staged in favor of a variety of female voices, nearly all of whom have long been in the group's orbit. It is unlike anything either artist has ever attempted and also totally in line with how they've created for much of their careers.

As for the album itself, I've listened to it about 7-8 times over my streaming service. At first, it didn't resonate too much with me. I can see why some folks think of it as "barely" The National. It was almost like they were covers of The National songs. But at the same time, I have to remind myself that this is a collaborative effort that involves a companion film. When both viewed and listened to in that context it really is a solid overall work. However, I do wonder if it should be considered the "true" 8th album in a context similar to how members Radiohead and other bands have their own tangents. Obviously the band says that it is the 8th, and it was the entire group that produced the effort (albeit with heavy outside influence given the film), but in the fan head canon that might play out differently. This is what happens with art. Occasionally it transcends the artists (whether they like it or not) and becomes something bigger. I suspect that's what's at play here. Either way, I'm pleased overall with the work and I appreciate the broader perspective.
Original: I just received my long-awaited copy of the 'I Am Easy to Find' and after carefully removing each disc from its sleeve I'm sorry to say that they both had horrible scratches (clearly from rough insertion into sleeve) and fingerprints (clearly from mishandling). I've attached photos and I've ordered a replacement copy. This is ridiculous. It's sad that such a great album with an otherwise lovely overall design received such treatment. I'll update my review if subsequent copies aren't so indicative of rushed, lazy production hack jobs.

We first stumbled upon The National as we walked in on a concert in which they played this entire album.
Has a little bit of everything, it rocks it has some soul and even feels or sounds as if there is some meaning to it
Our first introduction to the group and won’t be our last... buy it and I can guarantee you’ll like it
