I Don't Need an Acting Class Kindle Edition

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 34 ratings

I Don't Need an Acting Class explores critical aspects of the technique of acting, utilizing conversations via email with countless actors. Some are aspiring students, others are seasoned professionals. The conversations document the challenges these diverse actors face as they digest what they have learned in a class or rehearsal while exploring in practical terms how to use their growing technique.

Milton Justice first began receiving emails from actors in 2008. In this book, Justice brings together email conversations between teacher and student, along with observations and commentary about acting technique and craft. Not all of the emails in the book are overly thought-out or complete. Quite the contrary, they are meant to capture the feeling of a living, breathing process as it happens. When an actor sends a teacher or director an email with a problem, be it a simple comment or confusion, it is evidence of a creative artist exploring new ground.

Many years ago, Stella Adler sent Justice a letter in response to a panicked note he had written to her while lost in the weeds during rehearsals for a new play. She set a tone for him as she succinctly defined the problem and reminded him of its elegant solution. He was overwhelmed by the care she had given him. That letter still hangs over his desk, perfectly demonstrating the power of a written exchange between a teacher and a student.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Milton’s book isn’t just filled with incredibly useful technical guidance for performers, you can feel his larger than life personality in every page. He has distilled a lifetime of knowledge and experience working and training with actors into a tool that can be used and applied and lived with as we navigate our never-ending quest to be better."

—Sean Astin

"Milton Justice has been my director, my coach, and my friend for over 40 years. He inspires me. He simply tells it like it is. I bet he will inspire you!"

—Margo Martindale

"Few speak as clearly and passionately about the art and craft of acting as does Milton Justice. He offers his readers a pragmatic philosophy, forged in his long relationship with Stella Adler and tempered with his avid curiosity for new information on Stanislavsky and the elusive art of acting. Filled with wise words, useful advice, inspiration, and humor, Justice’s book is a must-read."

—Sharon Marie Carnicke, author of Stanislavsky in Focus

"I don't know anyone with more passion for acting than Milton. He's specnt years in the trenches solving practical problems for working actors. This book gathers those solutions."

—Grant Show

"Milton has inspired me to work harder and make better choices at every stage of my acting career. He knows what he is talking about. And he knows how to teach it.

—Chris Carmack

"In his book Milton uses correspondences to not only teach a masterclass on acting but also to convey the personal struggles and journey the actor takes to understanding. He covers the lost territory of Stella Adler’s and Stanislavsky’s work to lift acting to high artistry through the use of the imagination and blood memory. Everywhere you see the wisdom of Milton’s lifetime work… to understand acting for himself and his students. There is a good deal to get from this endeavor. It’s practical and relatable."

—Mark Ruffalo

The Most Brilliant Acting Teaching Living Today
The way Milton Justice interprets the teaching of Stella Adler and Konstantin Stanislavsky has been game-changing for me as an actor and creative artist. His book makes the technique of acting so accessible because his teaching addresses real actor problems. There are important principals that he returns to again and again which I think is a great way to learn. In the end, this book is for those who are interested in becoming more than accurate, mediocre actors who jump straight to a performance. It will teach you how to slow down and acquire a creative process that involves digging deep into character, circumstances and the world of the play.

Obviously, this book is being ironic. The book lays out some very logical ideas about an extremely difficult art form. Also, the author/teacher has great insights into Stella Adler's technique, a technique used by actors like Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro.

Whether you're an experienced actor or a novice, Milton Justice makes the techniques really practical in this book. It's clear that his years of training with Stella Adler gives him such an edge, such razor-sharp clarity on her concepts, that he is able to further paraphrase them and develop them even further for us today.

I thank Justice for writing this book because acting is a very difficult craft/artform, not only to practice but to teach. While Stella left us four books distilled from her famous classes, this book is a worthy companion to Adler's. I've been reading and re-reading sections as the ideas take deeper root in me.

If you do buy this book, do check out his acting podcast of the same title, "I Don't Need An Acting Class," on Apple podcasts. Great.

The beauty of “I Don’t Need an Acting Class” is that Milton Justice writes in such a way that by the end you will have absorbed many of the essentials necessary to great acting. Just sit back and allow the book to happen to you – it will, I assure you. The book is an astonishingly effective presentation of the techniques taught by the legendary Stella Adler and is a more than worthy companion piece to the outstanding texts by Uta Hagen and Jack Garfein. For actors who want to get the most out of themselves, it is a MUST!

5.0 out of 5 stars I've read a lot of acting books
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 30, 2022
I've read a lot of acting books including Art of Acting -Stella Adler, and Technique of Acting by Stella Adler. In fact I couldn't understand the techniques so I used the work of Mike Alfreds as my foundation . Milton has written a book that solves a lot of the issues that were left unanswered in Adler's books. It helps the actor understand the Given Circumstances, the Stakes, as well as the Ideas behind the play. Some of the concepts like 'A Play is a sequence of thought', along with the way he teaches actors to paraphrase has been game changing. I recommend reading it and listening to the podcast of the same name. It's one of the best acting books you can get because it answers so many questions about the issues we have in acting.

So much of acting seems so damned theoretical and obscure. This book is a clear response to actor problems. Mark Ruffalo's quote on the back cover is dead on: "It's practical and relatable."
