I have found that most emo music is crap. And with a name like "I Hate Myself," it was hard to not immediately assume that this was yet another group of 20-somethings stuck in the past, whining about mom, dad, teacher, and girlfriend.
Not so.
Not at all. This band is almost raw emotion. Every song on this album can send a shiver down my spine. I would recommend it to anyone...

Before I start I want to note that I used to hate emo, because I was close minded and I thought all emo's wore makeup and whined about small things and dressed like girls and were bisexual and whatnot. This is the real hardcore emo and what it stands for. It's not about the way you dress or act, it's just about the music, which is top notch. Think hard rock, tasteful screaming, apathetic vocals, and almost post-rock bridges. It's music that's calm one second and the next second the singer is screaming his lungs off. Every track on this CD is awesome, there is no filler whatsoever. It's tough to pick a favorite song. This is coming from a guy who only judged before I heard it myself. If you're new to the genre like I am, this CD won't disappoint. These guys knew how to write and play depressing yet beautiful music. After only one listen I was hooked. I hope you will be too.

God, I love this band. I love this CD.
I'm going to tell you my story for all of you who are skeptical. Maybe you don't like emo or whatever. Hear my words...
I was sitting in Programming class one day and was bored and had nothing to do so I went onto a skaponk.com and was looking at random lyrics. I came across the band name I Hate Myself. Woah. Nice name. How many times had I quietly said those words to myself? I looked at the lyrics. Very very amazing. I was in love with the name and lyrics. I was almost scared to listen to anything by them, I didn't to be disappointed.
I went to ol' trusty amazon.com. You know that list...the one something like "Users who bought this also bought..." You know the list I'm talking about. There it was. Dashboard Confessional. Pedro the Lion. Great. Emo. Lame. I was crushed.
But I saw it was under Alternative and Hardcore so I decided I'd download the song they supplied.
Nice. Very nice.
I got a hold of "Caught in a Flood with the Captain of the Cheerleading Squad" and "Destroy All Monsters" Each song got better and better. So I bought the CD.
It's been a long time since the last I fell so hard for a new CD like this.
The credits at the bottom of the sleeve are amazing. Everything about this band is too awesome.
Buy this CD.
I think someone in a review said if you like Dashboard you wouldn't like this. I think that's what it said. If so, I agree. If that's what you know of indie/emo you can't/won't appreciate this.
Thanks for listening to my story, I hope it helped any doubts you may have had on buying this CD.

I just purchased this CD. I am old school & for the longest time I kept hearing and reading this term "emo". It's obvious emo is short for emotion(al). Great, yet another stupid moniker to pigeonhole musical talent into a catagory. "Emotional" music has been around forever in every genre. Ask any musician - creating ANY music is an emotional endeavor of creativity. ALL music is emo on some level... but I digress.

This CD is an outpouring of emotion that is both tragic and beautiful and there is no way you can even have a conversation about it and mention bands like Dashboard - dont get me wrong Dashboard is good at what they do, but realistically I Hate Myself is an emotional torrent with NO restraint. Relating I Hate Myself to Dashboard on any level is like comparing Donny Osmond to Kurt Cobain.

Dashboard emo is like the feeling you get when you break up with a highschool girlfriend.

I Hate Myself is like the feeling you get from watching your sibling/bestfriend die in your arms of an overdose. If your not opposed to loud, hardcore music, and you have experienced this kind of loss first hand... Listening to this CD will touch your heart.

IMHO - If you don't get goosebumps every time you hear - This Isn't The Tenka-Ichi Budokai - then you have a dead cold heart of stone.

this album ... is amazing. it's as heart felt as it is bitter, the kind you can scream along with on your worst day and smile at on your best.

I'm only going to say a few words on this so I don't start sounding redundant. I Hate Myself is REAL emo. if you listen to bands like dashboard confessional, thinking what you're hearing is emo then you're saddly mistaken and this cd is definitely not for you. I'm absolutely serious when I say that I Hate Myself is a brilliant cd full of brilliant chords and brilliant lyrics. buy it, you won't be disappointed.
