Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1—A young child pays tribute to the critters in his backyard that creep, crawl, leap, or fly. "I love brightly-colored-wing bugs/and stripy swipey sting bugs," he declares as his picnic lunch is taken over by butterflies, yellow-jackets, and a dragonfly. The rhyming couplets describe how bugs move, how they sound, and what they look like. Delighting in the natural world, the boy is amazed and awed by the variety of creatures that can be found under logs, in hives, in the grass, and fluttering through the air. Best of all, though, are the eight-legged, hairy, scary ones that send him squealing. Large, brightly colored spreads convey an exploring child and his discoveries. Many of the creatures are larger than life and have expressive faces; most are smiling except for the fierce-looking one that sends the boy running. This lively, sound-filled selection will make your storytimes buzz.—Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI

From Booklist

This large-format picture book expresses a child’s admiration for many different sorts of insects and even a spider. Childlike in its broad use of the term bugs, the text juggles sounds and rhymes skillfully. The first eight double-page spreads carry rhymed couplets, such as “I love flouncy frilly flutter bugs and silly clitter-clutter bugs” and “I love whiny-buzzy-sound bugs and glide-across-the-ground bugs.” The final pages build toward the climax: “The hang-from the-ceiling bug . . . / and send-me-squealing bugs!” as a little spider casts an enormous shadow, frightening the narrator away. Varied in composition, palette, and scale, the illustrations have great vitality. Dodd often uses broad black lines to define forms against plain backgrounds, but the artwork includes a great many textures and patterns as well. The drawings of insects capture each species’ essential characteristics, and the cartoon-style eyes give individual critters personality. Easy to see from a distance, this would be an excellent choice for group sharing. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan

Like all of Emma Dodd's books, I Love Bugs is a delight. The pictures are great for group sharing, the text is the perfect length and invites alot of audience participation. Everyone can talk about what their favorite bug is, and which ones they really don't like. The illustrations just draw the kids in and the perfect ending is a nice opportunity to get a nice little scary spidery thrill! This book is a great story time addition whenever you need a short book with loads of charm.

This delightful book names and draws numerous bugs. I got it because our three year old suddenly has a great fear of all insects. It has opened the conversation about which are harmless and what they do.

My 17 month old daughter absolutely L O V E S this book! That they say the reading level is for ages 3 and up is inaccurate. I think it's the perfect type of "story" for young toddlers and even babies! My daughter wants us to read it to her several times a day, and she giggles and laughs at the adorably funny rhymes on every page and loves to point out her favorite bugs (ladybugs/bees). When we're not reading it, she's sitting and turning the pages by herself, just pouring over all the cute bug illustrations. She really loves the end of the book with the spider (eight-legged scary bug!) and even squeals when we read "and send me squealing bug!" This is NOT a "stupid book" as one other reviewer commented. It's not an insect encyclopedia, but it's not meant to be. It's just a really cute introduction to the bug world for small children. I don't tire of it either, because it's actually fun to read. My ONLY bone to pick is that it doesn't come in board book form. With the amount of readings this book gets, it's paper pages are getting quite a beating!

My 5-year-old great-niece is passionate about bugs and this book was the perfect gift for her. After her parents read it to her a few times, she was able to recite the rhymes on her own and spent hours looking at the wonderful images that describes her favorite critters so adequately. It's a great book to get little ones used to the sight and life of bugs.

This book will have your little one running out the door and wanting to become an outdoor detective just like the narrator of the story. The narrator, a little boy, is simply enthralled with the bug world and through large, vibrant, colourful illustrations his passion is passed on to the reader. Using large print and a smorgasbord of adjectives the little boy describes why these bugs are so endearing to him. "I love fuzzy sunny honey bugs and furry whirry funny bugs." "I love whiny buzzy sound bugs and glide-across-the ground bugs."

And then the big reveal happens....his most favourite bug of all? "But the best bugs are hairy bugs. Eight-legged scary bugs." Whatever bug could he be describing? Your child will discover and guess what that bug is and why the little boy has picked him to be his all time favourite. The drama and suspense surrounding that find will reinforce the fact that most kids although frightened by something will come back again and again to take a peek at the culprit just for the thrill of it and therefore will come back again and again to read this fun book. I am sure both you and your child will be delighted with this book.

My 2-year-old inherited one of my phobias-fear of bugs! To help get over it, I discovered this great book. Amazingly, after the first reading, he was helping with the caterpillars at daycare the next day! However, being the inquisitive little person he is, he wants to know what all of the bugs are. Poor me! I have no idea! I know caterpillar, ladybug, dragonfly, mosquito, grasshopper, honeybee, yellowjacket, cinchworm (looked that one up), but not the rest. I can't find anyway to contact Ms. Dodd for help. Does anyone know the names of all of those bugs?? I found that it is a great book to help allay some fears.

Not only did she write a fantastic book that has helped my son alleviate some fears about bugs, but she also provided me with the names of all of the bugs in the book! Thank you Emily Dodd!!

"I Love Bugs!" is a delightful, brightly colored, rhyming preschoolers' primer of the wonderful world of bugs. The textured, angled, imaginative illustrations interact with the charming text to surprise and delight the very young reader. Not a scientific anthology, "I Love Bugs!" is a descriptive, imaginative impression of a vast array of insect life including spiders (which adults are aware are not insects but arachnids). "I Love Bugs!" seems to speak from a true child's perspective, laved with wonder. "I Love Bugs!" is sure to delight any child age 0-4 or more, and will help stimulate a love of reading and exploration.
